What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a pen name as a writer on HubPages (or as a writer in general)? Also, does using a pen name impact your ability to defend/claim your work if it's stolen?

These are good questions, Geri. I have a pen name but often include my real name as well. A lot of people prefer to call me Jodah, even though they know my real name. I have been told that it is a lot easier in regard to copyright issues, however, if you always use your real name.
Some people prefer to keep their real identity a secret especially on the Internet, so prefer to always use a pen name.

Thank you for your response, Jodah. Yes, it seems that it would be more problematic to claim your work if you don't use your real name.

Unlike you, there are some authors who don't include their real name in their articles at all. They only use their pen name. I am interested to hear what they have to say.

I have zero problem claiming my work under a pen name.  You can register copyright under you legal name or your pen name.  Your send take down notices and conduct other legal business under your legal name but stating what your pen name is.  Never had any issues with it.

I use three pen names so that I can market my material directly and without confusion between my main profession (and associated writing) or the three other areas in which I write.  Pen names are an ancient tradition fully accommodated by the law.

I have been publishing under at least one pen name for over 15 years now, encompassing 20+ books published in three different countries, innumerable articles, shorts stories, poetry and online material.  I, personally, feel that having pen names was a very good choice given my diverse writing and non-writing activities.

Thank you for your response, psycheskinner. Very interesting indeed. I can see how having a different pen name for each of your niche topics would be very convenient.
