Whenever I search for my Hubs, I see HuffingtonPost links it seems like at least half of the time.

What is this site doing to rank so well in the search engines?

    Look at this:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/1 … 18663.html

This is not even a well-written article. It's a page with two paragraphs on it. Yet, it's getting good rankings. WTH?

Tons of links for a spider to crawl, and thus get noticed I believe.

Although quality do count towards getting back links the most important thing you need to rank for anything is back links. Because of its popularity Huffington Posts gets lots of back links to its articles , so even if the article is not high quality it still ranks well for those terms

OK. If you are saying that it is that specific article that is getting backlinks, then do you know how to find where these links are coming in from so we can try to replicate the process?

There are plenty of website that offer back link analyzing services , try "find back links to your site" or something similar and there would be many service popping up.
Another cool method is using Yahoo site explorer , where its relatively easy to analyze things

Huffington Post is a well-established news site, and as such it has several features that give the whole site a high reputation in Google's eyes:

    - constantly refreshing content (you can achieve that on HubPages by including News and eBay capsules in your Hubs)

    - articles on in-demand subjects

    - lots of people signed up for subscriptions or referring to Huffington Post articles on their blogs or websites (i.e. backlinks)

The age of the site has a bearing, too.  Older sites have more credibility.

Because of these site-wide features, ALL articles get the benefit.

I'm getting natural backlinks to some of my hubs. So why does Hubpages not have this site-wide reputational value? To be honest, I have earned some money, but not much. I can't really continue to write articles that make a few pennies unless I can find a way to turn my 3rd and 4th page search engine results into more 1st page results. There are easier ways to make money online.

I am willing to work with Hubpages, but I see no serious initiative from Hubpages to conduct training or help people who are working hard to write and get rankings. Stuff like 30 Day Challenges is not training. I don't need to be motivated. I need results.

I think what HuffPo does very, very quickly is issue a news item on something very new, and tag it with every possible related search term (and misspelling). They might be the only reputable source offering any information whatsoever, for example (hypothetical example) on richard heene, but they also tag it richard heane, richard hene, etc. to get the misspelling traffic too.

Since they are considered a news source, they will often appear in Google News, for instance.

They are very clever with their SEO.

It's not HubPages responsibility to train you. This is a site to publish your articles and earn money...that is all.

This is now the second time I've had to explain this, but here goes again.

The more money we make, the more money Hubpages makes. We are not talking about responsibility. We are talking about what's good for everybody. This is the second time I've seen that word misapplied in this context.

God, it's no wonder people aren't making more here. There is no group mentality to improve the site.

Hubpages, when are you going to put together a proper training course so that YOU can make more money. You had $2 million and couldn't put a few thousand of that into a training course so everyone could get more traffic?

There are plenty of hubs about how to improve your hubs , how to get back links to your hubs , how to improve your search engine rankings. Most of them have great information and surely will help you improve your hubs and rankings.
I suppose hub pages can have some links to these hubs in the help section or getting started or some where. Maybe they are already there I don't know for sure , but if your willing to do some search there are lots of free information available within hub pages

Have you read the Starting Out Guide from start to finish, including all the Hubs that are listed there?

All the information you need is there, waiting for you to read it.

Then I would expect HubPages to charge for that.

Some people, the ones who have taken the time to teach themselves SEO, do very well. I don't know that much about SEO but I am slowly learning but I make not bad money.

This is a site for writers...writers improve by writing. Why not have grammar courses, spelling courses. They are more important ways to improve the site.

There are a gazillion sites that can help people with SEO if they take the time to learn.

Success of your Hubs is what YOU put into it hmm not HP staff or rest of us. Be grateful you are part of a site with a good PR and cares about us and the site as a whole.

Huffington Post also links to one of my blog posts.  I never even heard of this Huffington Post until they link to my blog.  I guess I should be happy for the backlinks.
