   Depends what it is you're wanting to do. I still make a lot of use of Google's keyword tool, despite having a paid for a piece of keyword software.
   
   In fact, I swap between the too, measuring 'stuff' against each other. I'd certainly say the one I use is worth buying. But - don't buy it unless you intend to use it.
   
   Not sure of which is best, I just bought the one I use because it was reccomended - and it does it's job.

   I did a bit of investigating today and some seem to be potential time-savers. As in, you could find most of that info yourself if you cross referenced against a few free tools that do different things, but you can pay to use a site which spits most of the metrics out in one go. That sounds handy - search volumes cross referenced against competition for each keyword.

   What I like about the software is the info that you can't get from Google's free tool. For instance you get stats such as how many links they have, to their homepage and sub-pages ... which is useful when juding on the strength of a site.
   
   But - a good working knowledge of Firefox will likely give you the same. Sunforged is the go-to guy re Firefox and has written a few excellent hubs about the browser.
   
   And it does throw up niche stuff. Not all will be useful to you but some will be.
   
   In a nutshell, you could find most of what you're looking for yourself but they are efficient regarding time.

   You can use the keyword tools in your analytics account.
   That actually tells you what words are searched for on your already written hubs.
   Which can help if you want to write more on similar topics.
   This way you know what words people typed into google to get to your site.  just and idea.

   Some keyword tools are invaluable even if you have to pay for them but everything depends on what your goals are.
   
   It is a bit like choosing a motor vehicle.
   
   You could be quite satisfied with the services an electric bicycle can provide or you could be in need of a large 20 ton truck. Other situations will warrant a comfortable limousine...
   
   Personally, I use four of them all the time:
   
   Market Samurai (The Dojo)
   Keyword Catcher (DoozySoft)
   Keyword Research Pro (Mr. Lim)
   Google Adwords Keyword Tool (Free service)
   
   The first three are paid tools worth every dime every time I use them.

   They don't come cheap though - the ones I was coming across today ranged from $40 per mth to $80, and one was over $100. It's hard to work out what's worth the money and what isn't (read reviews and you'll get so many different points of view - which is, I suppose, your point that it depends on what your needs are).
   
   My gut says that in theory that there are good keyword tools that are worth paying for. My head says there's a really good chance that you'll choose a dodgy one with crap data and get ripped off.
