I have 2 questions?

   First is can anyone tell me of a site where I can download photos for free.  I need people and animals, separately and together.
   
   Second is what does the number next to my profile picture mean?
   I understand the rating for the hubs published and how they go up
   and change but what does the one in my pic mean?

      Can't you just google images for photos? thats what I use, I try and avoid photos with watermarks on however, I never mess with them, just drag the ones you want to your desktop, as long as they are'nt copyrighted

         Ouch! ALL Images are copyrighted, ALL of them are. Once anyone takes a picture they are the copyright holder of that image. Public domain pictures are a myth.

               I'm afraid not. That's why those places that I made a link to in the above post exist. Google anything about using images from google and you'll find lots of information about it.
               
               If you use google images you'll find hundreds of images I have. I hold the copyright to them, as I took them. I don't state on each one that they are copyrighted, because I don't have to.
               
               There is no such thing as public domain images. All images belong to the person who took the pictures, or to the person they sold the rights to. You can buy the rights to an image, but you can't just copy it.
               
               Some put a link to the website below an image they copied from there. That's better, but it's still wrong. It's the same as copying text. You would not want me to copy your articles right? Same goes with images.

         No, you can't.  All images are copyright by their creator unless there's accompanying text saying they're not.  90% of the images found by Google Images are copyright.
         
         You can do an advanced search on Google Images "labelled for commercial use" (which HubPages is), but it's highly inaccurate and returns lots of copyrighted photos mixed in with genuine Creative Commons photos.  The results tell you that it's your responsibility to check before using the photos.
         
         I use Flickr a LOT.  Do an advanced search and tick "for commercial use" and you'll get all the photos you can use. All you have to do is include a hyperlink to the photographer's photostream in your Hub.

      Photobucket.com has millions of all things. There are voulantary photo and pic site that allow you legal access to use of photo and pics.
      
      If a valid copyright has lapsed, or the item is not copy-righted, unless they, or someone else, re-establishes it and it enters the public domain, it is public property period.
      
      If illegally placed on the web, the copy-right owner can ask you to remove it from use. And sue if you do not.
      
      I have been through the legal end of this while designing my own and others' books covers. Cost me alot of money and time and a hell headache. And I am still not perfectly clear on it.
      
      But I guess it was a learning experience.

         Yes, and most of them are copyrighted photos that have been stolen illegally. If you search around the small print of the site enough, you'll find in sub-clause x that you're not supposed to put mages on the site that you don't have a legal right to - but you'd never guess otherwise.

   Yes, habee is right.  Your author score relates to many factors... how well you participate in the community, your traffic to hubs and the quality of written material.
   
   You can get free clipart too.

      Thank you for taking the time to explain.  Seems awfully complicated considering all I need it for was an article.  I do want to give credit where credit is due if that helps.  Just not familiar with how to do all this.  Thanks again.

         On the flip side, i have lots of great photos, maybe I dont feel like writing up my own descriptions...it would be pretty easy to just copy and paste some text I find on the web.
         
         Its even easier than finding and uploading a photo!

         Well, if you think about it, how would you feel if a photographer copied your text without giving credit?  Whether it's a photograph, a painting or an article, they are all the creations of an artist - and the rule is, do as you would be done by!

      Same thing applies to those. Sometimes you could use a photo from a news agency or press release that has the photographers name under it, and credit the photographer under the image.
      
      But they could ask you to take it down if they wanted to. Another "gray" area is altering an image. If you take an image and alter it enough, some say you have now created your own work and are safe.
      
      I'm just telling you what I know. Lot's of gray area on the net, as we all know. I know lots about images because I have an adult site.

      I get my pictures of famous people from Wikipedia. I check to see if the image is copyright free first as not all on Wikipedia are but they print the license info. For some writers I have had to use book covers instead of pictures of the authors.
