The origional redemption

I understand very little concerning the origin of the word Redemption. It is my understanding that way back when, people might find themselves in a position of being sold into slavery possibly for debts that they could not pay. Family or friends were permitted to redeem the person by paying their dept, otherwise they were auctioned off. Yea I could google it.
But that wouldn't be any fun.
This way might be more informative.
Do you know anything about the original redemption ??
