Wish me luck Robin. I had difficulty with a bug meetup has in the community feature which incorrectly changes the location.

In the past I have been a meetup organizer of a couple of groups and I have seen meetup's growth as they have added new features.

The bug with the new "community feature" forces the group to show up as "New York, NY" which is 60 miles away from where I have created the HubPages' meetup... "Long Island, NY".

I see other Hubbers are discovering the same problem. I hope this doesn't confuse people who would want to attend.

I'll let you know how things progress.

          Hi Glen,
Thanks for the heads up.  We've been talking to Meetup about some of their bugs.  They just launched a new version of the Meetup Everywhere platform and it has been really buggy.  We'll email our rep about your issue and let you know!  Thanks!

            Glen,
Did you create the Meetup via the custom location track?  You can search for your location in the search box on the top right.  Meetup will show you communities near you, or there is a link below the results saying "start a new community in X".   Unfortunately, it's not very intuitive.  Thanks for giving it a go, though!

              Hi Robin,

Sorry for the delay in responding. I just came back to this thread to see if there is anything new and found your question from 2 weeks ago.

When I first tried to create the meetup it forced it to be in my local home town. I have a meetup account as I am in several meetup groups and it used my zip code. So I scratched that one and tried to make one more general by using the custom location track. I called this "Long Island, NY" so I get people from anywhere in Long Island. But somehow that got changed automatically to "New York, NY".

Funny thing is that it correctly says "Long Island, NY" in the top left corner and then it says "New York, NY" right under that. This is misleading since New York, NY implies New York City, which is 60 miles west of the meeting place. I wish there was a way to correct that. I also wish I could delete the incorrect group that will forever be noted as "This community is just getting started ".  I see a lot of those stuck in limbo.

I only have 3 people signed up so far and one of them is me! We have 4 weeks to go until the meetup date so hopefully other Hubbers will discover this.

                Hi Glen,
I can delete the community, but unfortunately I can't edit it.  If I delete it, the other members would be deleted as well.  Whatever you'd like me to do is fine with me.  The platform can be so frustrating, but I think it's the best way out there to meet.  Hopefully, they are working on making it better.  Thanks!
                Robin

Thanks Robin.  I don't want to delete it. I'm willing to give it all my best up till the end.  If only 3 people show up, so be it. But hopefully more will discover it. I guess that would happen only for those who browse the forums.

If you want to delete the one that was created by error, go ahead. I wish they gave me a way to undo it when I tried to create it and it 'took' the wrong location.  Anyway, the one you can delete is "Coram, NY" ... as you can see there are no members in that anyway.

The one titled "Long Island, NY" is the good one.

Anything that has some RSVP activity should be advertised. I wonder if it would help to place these in the home page or send an email to members. What do you think?

As for Meetup in general...I belong to several Meetup groups and I was an organizer of a few in the past. Meetup is a great venue. Their regular groups function well, those where an organizer pays to organize a group. Only these new communities are buggy. Maybe because they are free, meetup does not put much attention to them.

Only 3 more weeks to go for my HubPages Meetup in Long Island. Let's hope for the best.

                  Thanks again.

You are a trooper for hanging in there!  I deleted the Coram Meetup; I hope that eliminates some of the confusion.   If you send me your address via email robin.edmondson@hubpages.com, I will send you a HubPages t-shirt to wear at your Meetup.  wink  Thanks again!  Hubbers like you are what make this community work!  Cheers!  Robin

I'm having problems with the meetup site. It seems you can't delete a meetup. I tried to plan one in San Ramon and it says it's in Pleasanton. Then I tried to make a comment and it's planned another meeting in Pleasanton with no date. I'm unable to delete that one.

Also, it would be useful if people could use their HubPages IDs when signing up for meetups. I'd like to browse a few articles from the people I'm about to meet before I meet them.

We presently have only 5 people signed up for the upcoming HubMeet in Long Island, NY. I am afraid it might be due to the problem with Meetup that Long Islanders think it is 60 miles away in NYC. I know of at least one other Hubber near here who never signed up after a few comments about it.

So I let Meetup know about the problem and Lisa, a Community Support Specialist, told me that "Meetup Everywhere platform selects your location by default, and in this case it selected a location different than where you intended to schedule your Meetup.

She told me that Robin Edmondson can delete it so I can create a new one. But that is not an acceptable option since we already have a few people signed up. This is very frustrating.  I told her that a good feature would be one that lets us correct the location. And I asked if she could manually correct it for our group. It may be too late for this week's meetup. But we'll see what comes of it.

I'm still going to keep the HubMeet scheduled. After all we do have 5 people now.

In case anyone missed it, I wrote a Hub on the events of our last HubMeet. http://hubpages.com/hub/HubPages-Social … s-HubMeets

I think HubMeets are a great way for Hubbers to meet other local writers and to discuss mutual experiences writing on HubPages.

How are other Hubber Organizers doing with their HubMeets? Give us some comments.

      melbel,

Not to worry about being shy. When you run your local group you will find that the people who attend are not just Hubbers, but they turn out to be your friends. I'm looking forward to reading your Hub on your meetup. I wish I could be there, but I'm 800 miles away.

One thing that looks confusing...is your meetup in Chicago, IL or in Michigan City, Indiana. I had trouble with that when I first set up my local meetup. Looks like they never fixed that bug yet and it's a major reason why you and I seem to be the only two who are running Local HubPages Meetups. I believe this is why others have given up, due to location errors. If you have trouble, shoot an email to Robin. She was very helpful getting my group straightened out with meetup HQ.

Yeah!  Congrats on setting up your first MeetUp.  I'm sure it will be great.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Also, do you have a t-shirt yet, Melbel?  Being an Elite you might, but if not, I'd be happy to send one to you for the Meetup, etc.  If you want to send me an email with your info. (size and address), I'll get it in the mail to you,  Keep us updated on how it all goes!

Sounds great! I'll send along my address. Also, should I rename the meetup to something else and make it so that it's not a Chicago group? Just debating whether or not it's too far from Chicago to be considered a Chicago meetup.

I ran into the same problem when I started my group. There is a bug in the meetup system that forces groups into another city (sometimes another State) rather than using the zip code we enter.

They never fixed it. But they did, however, add an edit button to the title so you can change it. That was my suggestion to them. But it seems they dropped the ball after that. I see many HubMeet groups in the wrong places and therefore abandoned.

When you edit the title you can at least show the correct location. But it still lists under the wrong city.

Okay, so that's all the ranting I'm going to do. smile  Just want to share with you that despite all that, it will work out for you if you persist. I have 13 members already. Your group will grow too. Don't give up just because meetup doesn't have a functioning platform.  The key elements work fine. For the most part anyway.

Since your group is showing up in a completely different State, I would suggest trying to create another one and see if you can force it into the right place. Robin was helpful with deleting the bad (wrong) groups after I was done doing that.

If all else fails, go ahead and change your title. At least that will help. Mine is still listed in the wrong city too. But changing the title helped.

I wish you good luck and much success.

Wow, that's really frustrating! I changed my location from where I live in Michigan to Michigan City, Indiana and it let me create a meetup for Michigan City.

I wish I could name it Michiana Hubbers or something since that's what they call our area, but it won't let me change it.

Robin, could you do me a huge, huge, huge favor and delete the Chicago meetup (keep the group because I'd be willing to travel to Chicago) and somehow I created a sub group of Chicago called "Michiana Hubbers (Michigan/Indiana/Illinois Tri-State Area)" so delete that one entirely.

    Just keep this one:
    http://www.meetup.com/HubPages/Michigan-City-IN/

Man, I wish it didn't say Michigan City.. then it sounds like it's just for people from Michigan City.

Ideally meetup.com would let you name a meetup and pin a general area on a map.

Also, is there a way to delete a meetup date once you set one?

    1. Glenn Stok profile image97
Glenn Stokposted 12 years agoin reply to this

Melbel, I mentioned you at our HubMeet today.

Hopefully I can shed some light on your questions...

YOU: I wish it didn't say Michigan City..

ME: If you don't want to say "Michigan City" then click 'edit' next to the title and change the title. That's one thing I got meetup HQ to do for me. adding that edit feature.

YOU: Ideally meetup.com would let you name a meetup and pin a general area on a map.

ME: The HubMeets are done via a new platform called Meetup Everywhere and they obviously are not maintaining or supporting it. Maybe someday they will drop it entirely. My guess based on the total non-support. Then the only option qouljd be to do it under the standard meetup.com, which organizers need to pay for (not many people know that).

YOU: Also, is there a way to delete a meetup date once you set one?

ME: Yes, You can click to select a new date. See link next to the date.

As I mentioned previously in the comments section of your latest meetup hub, it was well worth the fifty miles that I had travelled to attend. The other members who attended, have a lot of great skills to offer in addition to writing. There is a lot of writing potential within this group. In addition I think they offer some excellent tips that can make the Hubpages site an even greater community site for everyone.

Any further posts related to any particular local group will continue in their own forum thread. This has been discussed with Robin so that members will have just one place for local members to follow their own group.

Therefore see our latest post in the Forum for the Long Island Group for info on our 4th HubMeet in September.
