Do you feel compelled to hide / deny the fact that you play a lot of video games?

I've been gaming competitively for goin on about a decade now, yet most of my close friends still have no idea. Not that I lie about it, but I don't boast about it. I won't deny it if they ask, but I don't put it out there for the world to know. How do others feel about the same topic? Are you a "Closet gamer"?

Sounds like exactly how I handle being a vegetarian.  In a way there are some negative connotations that go along with my so-called title, and there's no reason to put it out there until people ask.

I think it's a similar thing, and if you're happy with the way you're handling it, that's great.

I wonder if you've seen the movie "The King of Kong."  If not, you should check it out.  It's an excellent documentary!

And anyway, as a gamer myself (who has slowed down because of school), I never really found any reason to talk about it, except if someone asked, or if they were gamers themselves.  Hope that helps.

Nope. Gaming, for me is a hobby, and it's something I am proud of even if I don't know some popular games some people do - I play what I feel like playing and not what's popular. Like all other hobbies where people display their work, etc, the same is Gaming for me. It's not something to post daily (like what you have been playing and what level) on facebook though but it's something I won't deny.

Not at all. I take my gaming very seriously as proven in my poem, Trials of a Gamer. I'm like a rugged tracker stalking new prey on the shelves, or a fearless warrior trying to strike down the latest foe. I'm glad to say I'm a video game. I'm ashamed to say though that there are others who claim to be gamers.

I'd only hide it if I was planning on PK'ing them later on.  =-P

I used to be a hardcore gamer when I was a teenager, now as an adult, I am more of a casual gamer.  I don't see any reason to hide that fact that you are a gamer.  It is a choice that you and you alone make. It really shouldn't matter what other think anyways.

My partner is a gamer, but he's not in the closet about it. He loves his gaming and let's other's know when a game he is excited about is on the market. I always make note of double XP weekends so he can play the weekends away and I'll have time to read a new novel.

No, I am not a closet gamer although gaming is a somewhat intimate experience that I wouldn't want to engage in if there are other people around, such as in public places etc.

Not at all. Since I was 15 years old I spend loads of time in front of the computer and I always speak about myself as some kind of computer nerd smile.
This is not a negative thing, although some people still think it is.
Playing on the computer helps me relax and entertains me a lot - why should anyone think that something is wrong with me only because of that? smile

I play as much as I can get away with, but don't talk about it at work.  My gaming website is also anonymous, as I don't want my business profile being mixed up with my personal interests.

I even use an avatar for my hubpage profile, and not my real name!

Gaming is still associated with being anti-social, being a slacker, or a nerd of some sort in the eyes of the previous generation, people in their mid to late 40's.  Everyone else is a gamer of some sort, even if its just on the iphone.

    Cheers

    Roly
