   Diabetes runs really bad in my family, so I very much believe genetics plays a role in it.  However, I also think it can be prevented, even if you are at high risk of developing it due to genetics.  Obviously, keeping your diet in check and exercising, etc. will lower your chances.

   I think it depends on one's diet. If a mother is eating highly processed foods, high fructose corn syrup and not taking care of herself, her child is more likely to get diabetes. On the other hand, if the mother is healthy thru out pregnancy and her child ends up getting diabetes, her child's diet is to blame. Baby formula is said to have high amount of pesticides and other poison.
   
   You want to prevent diabetes? Stop eating high fructose corn syrup, and go as organic in your diet as possible. Don't eat processed foods in a whole. Eat them sparingly.

   I believe that diabetes can be acquired both ways. For those people who does not inherit the illness, it can be acquired due to lifestyle factors. Meanwhile, for those people who has inherited this illness, it can be triggered by certain environmental triggers.

   I don't think it is a matter of belief, but what science has shown us.
   
   Type 1 diabetes is genetic but type 2 is much more complex.
   
   Genetically you can have a higher risk, in other words you are more insulin sensitive. This is similar to those people who are at a higher risk for skin cancer than others. Does this mean they will get skin cancer even if they stay out of the sun? Of course not.
   
   If you are more insulin sensitive than others, you need to watch your carb intake more seriously. type 2 diabetes is not genetic in almost all cases, and can be prevented. Not only can it be prevented, but it can even be reversed in many cases.
   
   No medication is needed if someone eats correctly. Of course most people wouldn't know this since billions of dollars are made off people buying these products.

   Some people get it because of having the gene for it and others get it from being overweight and eating the wrong things. I have Type 2 Diabetes. I have been to Diabetes education classes. One of the people there was a man who was painfully skinny. He rarely ate carbs. His diet was mostly meat and vegetables. There is no way he would have gotten it if he didn't have the genetic disposition for the disease.

   Diabetes is a disease with polygenic (inherited by many genes) inheritance, except for the some rare forms of diabetes (MODY and LADA) which follow a Mendelian pattern of inheritance. The fact that the inheritance of a disease is polygenic means, that the family history has some influence of acquiring the disease, but many additional factors also come into play. So, what we get from the genes is the susceptibility to develop diabetes. Development of the disease when faced with other risk factors (e.g. - high sugar diet, physical inactivity) is easier when the genetic susceptibility is higher.
   So the answer to your question is true - it is acquired, but the risk is genetically inherited.
