Hey, great question I actually researched the sleep cycle quite extensively in college in relation to dreamology. What you can try is the following.
Go without sleep for about 2 days (give or take a few hours) plan it out so that the last hour will end when you would like your new sleep schedule to begin.
For example, you'd like to get to bed around 11PM every night and wake up around 7AM this would give you roughly 8 hours of sleep. So you'll want your 48 hour sleep deprivation to end around 11PM.
How does it work? This technique is used more so for lucid dreaming so this may be a side effect if you do go without sleep for 48 hours. Of course it will also naturally make you quite tired.
*If you do choose to try this technique make sure you do not have any important plans going on, you will need two days to just relax and take it easy do not drive far distances. Sleep deprivation has symptoms similar to alcohol intoxication so be safe! Also make sure you are drinking a decent amount of water and taking vitamins.*
