3 Ways to Look & Feel Younger

Baby Boomer Boogie

It's common knowledge that baby boomers now account for the largest segment of the population. Thanks to medical advances and a higher health consciousness, they are also more youthful than previous generations. Despite already having an advantage in this regards, boomers don't want to get or feel any older any faster than they have to.

The following tips may help stave off the dreaded wrinkle faerie and put a spring in your step and mental capabilities, too.

Tip #1 - Work From the Inside Out - Eat your way to higher energy. Fresh fruits, especially strawberries, as well as fish and fortified yogurts and milk will help produce more DHEA, which will in turn boost a more youthful energy level.

As most everyone already knows, eating blueberries and other sources of natural anti-oxidants combat the damaging affects of free radicals. This will bolster your immune system and contribute to keeping disease at bay. Your body will maintain a younger level of health.

Tip #2 - An Active Body is a Happy Body - The fastest way to feel and appear old is to be inactive. In fact, your body will age faster without activity. Don't go nuts and hurt yourself by trying to do something far beyond what you've been doing. If you've been a couch potatoe for the last fifteen years, you would be ill advised to suddenly participate in a triathilon. Work your way up by gradually increasing your physical activity. Start with five minutes of morning stretches to get your body more flexible and increase the lubrication in your joints. Gradually increase as you feel ready for more.

Tip #3 - Increase Your HGH Levels - This tip is so important if you want to turn back the clock. HGH (Human Growth Hormone) starts decreasing when we are in our thirties, and is responsible for making us look and feel older. It's natural decrease reportedly contributes to loss of energy and muscle mass, as well as leading to diabetes and depression.

In order to increase your levels of HGH, you can take supplements, but there are mixed reviews regarding their effectiveness, and being synthetic there is the possibility of side affects. That being said, there is another school of thought that recommends taking a pure, concentrated, natural HGH supplement.

Another method is to find food sources. Since there are three different amino acids necessary to raise your HGH levels, you need foods from each group, as shown below, for the desired affects.

Amino Acid #1 - L-Arginine - highest levels found in plant and soy proteins. Believe it or not, chocolate is one source of L-Arginine, along with nuts, seeds, raisins, popcorn, oatmeal, whole wheat bread, yogurt and brown rice.

Amino Acid #2 - L-Ornithine - found in dairy products and eggs, meat and fish.

Amino Acid #3 - L-Lysine - protein sources found in red meat, pork and poultry, cheese, nuts, eggs, and some soy products

Something to note about eating your way to higher HGH levels is that you need to ingest large amounts of each amino acid group to see significant results.

Action Creates Reaction

If you've been concerned about aging, there are things you can do. It maybe won't stop Mother Nature dead in her tracks, but she will start moving with weighted feet if you take a conscious, proactive approach to keeping yourself young.

Now, to quote Mark Knowles, go outside and play.

Seems like you have everything covered. The exercise is probably the ebst advice for someone who isn't quite over the hill yet. Exercise keeps the metabolism raised also and helps to digest food and burn calories. Good Hub.

Very good info...we are what we eat and how we move.  You and my brother are on the same page.  He is a nutritionist and has diabetes.  He has spents years doing research about anti-inflammatories and how inflammation is killing us.  Sugar, the big enemy.  shhh don't tell constant walker as his extreme chocolate chip cookie recipe is scrumptious   -- you have to eat one bite of something like that and then walk 3 miles.  LOL   worth it tho if u love chocolate and I do.

Everytime I unwrap a bite of dark chocolate I tell myself it's good for me.

I do prefer milk chocolate tho.  sigh.  can't win.

Rodney, thank-you, I appreciate it.

Eileen - you are very welcome, thx for coming by and reading.

Marisure - don't tell your brother, but a life without sugar and milk chocolate just isn't worth living....almost as bad as life without beer!

Do you have the secret to stopping chocolate cravings though???

I guess in moderation ok, but I always find it hard to stop!!

robie2 profile image

robie2  says:

Good job, Shirley. If there is a fountain of youth, it is exercise. It sure has helped me....And mental attitude is just as important. I would be careful re HGH--there are some potentially really dangerous side effects it seems. Like they say, getting old isn't so bad when you consider the alternative :-)

Shirley Anderson profile image

Shirley Anderson  says:

LDSNana - Actually, I think that's a very good to put it....do whatever works for you. Doesn't matter what it is. Thx for mentioning that.

Marg07 - if I knew how to stop chocolate cravings, I'd be rich! :) I'm particularily fond of milk and white chocolate, but I'm lucky because I only get about one craving every 5 years. But when I do, look out! If your cravings are only occassional, does it really matter?

Shirley Anderson profile image

Shirley Anderson  says:

Thx, Robie. You're right about the mental attitude and its connection to youthfulness. I believe it to be very important.

Re the HGH supplements, I read both schools of thought - that it is bad and that it is good - what I came up with is that the pure, concentrated are much better and offer little in the way of side effects. The synthetics are the worst culprits. Personally, I feel safer trying it via food. Though they say that you have to eat large amounts from each of the 3 amino acid groups, I think any amount you eat is going to be beneficial, and totally without side effects. I'm not opposed to trying the pure supplement, but I'd like to try the safest method first. Not only that, I'm lazy and hate shopping....I'd have to go to a store to make the purchase of a supplement.

Thx for your comment!

I like the chocolate tip! A very educational hub - I do try anad eat 5 pieces of fruit per day but had not realized the usefulness of strawberries, thanks!

Shirley Anderson profile image

Shirley Anderson  says:

Actually, PJDScott, I didn't know about strawberries being significant either, until I recently read an article that mentioned it. I think any fruit is good, but blueberries (my favourite :)) are especially good because of their anti-oxidant properties. Thx for commenting!

Uh. Baby boomers sound familiar to me, but I dont' know what that means. When were they born? And why are they called baby boomers? Which countries use that?

Shirley Anderson profile image

Shirley Anderson  says:

Hi BeatsMe:

Baby boomers were born between 1946-64ish. After the end of the second world war, the soldiers came home after being gone a long time....you get the picture. Once the pill came along, the birth numbers started declining.

I'm afraid I don't know if any other continent besides North America uses the term.

You realize that these questions mark you as a youngster.....I'm going to have to start using this technique so no one will guess that I'm a boomer. :)

Dottie - we take pride in making people silly! It's our little way of giving back, and contributing to the emotional health of others. How're we doing?

Well, considering Ringo married someone else, I don't feel guilty in the slightest. Thank-you for keeping the secret, but if it should slip out while you're talking to him, it serves him right.
