Crip Walk

The Crip Walk originated in the early 1980s in South Central Los Angeles as a symbol for Crips. This is not a dance, but rather a walk done by Crips. The main focus of Crip Walking was to represent your hood, area code, or gang by throwing up signs with your hands or spelling out a set of words.

Originally, members of the street gang JoeShow Riots would use nimble movements of their feet to spell out their names or other Crips words (sometimes spelling out Bloods, the name of their rival gang, and then crossing it out). Many Crip gangs also use the C-Walk to celebrate the initiation of a new member. It is also believed that the C-walk was used as a warning, for example in the build-up to a robbery: The lookout would stand outside of the store and act as surveillance, while the robbers would await the signal—the C-walk. Typically performed to West Coast gangsta rap and G-funk, the C-Walk first hit the mainstream when rapper Ice-T performed it on stage in front of cameras in the late '80s. Later, rapper WC would follow suit and add to its popularity; however, he clearly let the public know that this was not a dance, as "gangstas don't dance they boogie", and that it was only meant to show love to other Crip members.

The How to Crip Walk Steps

a) Stand up with both feet together.

b) Jump & turn towards the right slightly.

c) Land with right foot in front on heel & left foot towards the back on toes.

d) Jump & turn slightly to the left and land how you began, with both feet together.

e) Do the same with left foot in front as you turn slightly to the left.

Explanation

First stand up tall & relax. It will look strange if you're all tense. Now, position your feet about 3 inches apart. For people right handed, start with your right foot, for people left handed start with your left foot. Now make a baby step hop on to your better foot. Your foot should end up at a 45 degree angle & your toes should be up with your heel on the floor. Then you slightly bend your knees & put your foot down. Repeat the same pattern with your other foot. It sounds pretty confusing, but it's not. It just takes time & effort.

Tip: You can add some quick jumping to the left and right rapidly, harlem, wave, whatever for style. But for the basic concept of crip walk, the above explains it well.

I never knew it was consider a gang sign. It became quite popular here in the Phils, as a dance, "do the harlem" dance. I think late last year, around Snoop Dog and the like. So maybe nowadays, it has been assimilated too as a groovy dance step? I hope so, it will be sad if the youth dancing to it, will be associated to gangs. (^^,)

ROFL Look at that... "bloodz" are my life - this individual can't even spell. Who cares though - Gangs are stupid. God didn't intend on us to be killing each other over diversity and what not. If your in a gang your typically insecure with yourself. God loves you.
