How Do You Know if You are in Love?

Updated on November 23, 2010

So, how do you know if you are in love? Many people have asked this question and probably received quite different answers and while it may sound like a tough question, but I'll do my best to share with you ways to know for sure that you are in love. If you read over this hub and you're still unsure, you've got a bigger problem and I suggest you talk to a therapist or relationship counselor to get to the root of it.

How do you know if you are in love?

First let's talk about the difference between loving someone and being in love. When you love someone it feels good, to know that you have a person in your life that you can give everything to and share moments, ideas, and experiences. It feels good to do things for the one you love out of the goodness of your heart, and of course, when you love someone, it feels great to think about them. That is loving someone, and there are many more examples of loving someone, but let's move on to what being in love means.

A wedding blog I frequent has a list of marriage quotes that say a lot about love. For instance:

"What a happy and holy fashion it is that those who love one another should rest on the same pillow. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne"

Yet, laying on the same pillow as someone doesn't guarantee that the two are in love. Here are some ways you can tell if you are in love with someone.

I love someone but am I in love?

The main difference between loving someone and being in love with someone is the reciprocity of it. To love someone is great, but to be in love with someone is something far better. Knowing that the person you love feels the same way about you can boost the feelings you feel when you think about them, enhance the emotions you experience when you are intimate with them, and make you happier just know that they love you too. This mutual affection towards each other is what is necessary to take your relationship to the next level.

Let me ask some questions:

  • Do you sometimes stay awake longer just thinking about the person you love?
  • Have you ever felt addicted to the person you love? You just can't get enough?
  • Do you have any desire to be with anyone else?

If you are in love with someone, likely you're both thinking about the other person, you both long for each other's company and wouldn't want to be spending that time with anyone else.

Are you in love?
