New Hubbers Ask...

I'm a beginner and I want to maximum my profits as a blogger Do you have any tips? How long are hubs?

This questions above asked by professional25 is pretty good, compared to some written to me about online income and freelance writing.

During the first month of 2011, I received a number of requests from new Hubbers (some of whom have written no Hubs yet) for me to tell them how to quickly earn a Hubber Score of 100, a Hub Score of 100, and a large immediate income from HubPages. Every month, emails ask how much money I earn at HubPages -- Someone would need to be naïve and careless in order to hand out financial information to a stranger with a nickname on a hotmail account. I am not that person. The stories about attempted Identity Theft upon this unworthy personage would fill several blog pages by themselves.

Making a living on HubPages takes time and work, although since HubPages Staff have added a cornucopia of new features over the last four years, that task is becoming easier. You can read in the Forums about milestones and income levels reached and it's all encouraging.

Consistent writing and publishing on close to a daily basis, employing a substantial amount of high quality content about topics of interest will increase Hubber Score and individual Hub Scores over time. Participation in HubPages Contests, HubMob, 30-Day and 60-Day Challenges, HubPages Answers, and new programs that emerge helps to drive traffic to your Hubs from a group working together within a larger group (HubPages). Using Live Feeds (rss) from these groups or even your own creation can further drive traffic your way and applies to blogging as well.

Follow the tips on HubPages and your blogs and Hubs will be much better than Plan Nine From Outer Space, the poorly written cult film.

Blog With a Plan

Wil Wheaton writes a blog on typepad as a profession and I don't know how he makes income from it directly, since I see no ads on his blog as we have on HubPages.

However, he uses it as a platform to sell his own books on the sidebars, which is handy. He also offers podcasts, lists his tours and appearances, and provides other information. He has a news column in LA, so his blog is a good connector to his column and his acting and writing careers.

Hubber Marye Audet has an attractive and interesting blog calledThe Restless Chipotle. She's on Facebook and always has something fun or intriguing or real to say there.

Blog With a Plan

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has a website. Join the site as I did; it’s fun and offers opportunities for collaboration with other artists and writers. You might like the "Tiny Books" there, the videos, the T-shirts, or the music.

JGL also uses tmblr for blogging as hitRECordJoe and appears also on Twitter.

He's quite a character, all the way back to 3rd Rock From the Sun and I look forward to seeing him in the future inh all his work.

The Dark Knight Rises he is entertaining. He runs a production company (you can join that as well) and features several 'Tiny Films" on the website and tmblr. It is a concept that I love - animations and live action of 15, 30 seconds, a minute, 6 minutes.

Joe began producing his own feature-length films in what seems like no time.

If you have not yet seen him in 500 Days of Summer, his grand song-and-dance production number in the middle of the film is worth the price of the whole DVD. He was absolutely superb in the recent Inception.

You may remember that he was in 10 Things I Hate About You a modern high school take on The Taming of the Shrew . He has plenty of opportunity for making money from a blog, using it as part of his resume.

William Shatner - Capt. Kirk, T.J. Hooker, Denny Crane

William Shatner and friends have produced a website for creative persons available for work, on MyOuterSpace.com. The website features its own site blog as well as a blogging feature for members to use for posting and social networking that includes Twitter postings.

No affiliate marketing is available, but writers, artists, directors - new and long-time professional are picking up a lot of work from the sites. Alan Dean Foster supervises the group I joined, He is the Governor of the planet Creatia.

Six "starship" groups pull in members when they are about to begin a film project or similar.

Lorna Barrett is a well-known author that wrtes a blog to accentuate her books. She also appears on Goodreads a book and social networking site that I enjoy.

Social networking is useful for driving traffic to your blog or Hub and these are the best for me:

  • LinkedIn - Live feed of my Hubs and Twitter posts runs here.
  • MyOuterSpace.com - William Shatner's site for all phases of media, entertainment, and arts. Join for the chance to connect and hire on to Hollywood productions.
  • GOODREADS - Book reviews by interesting people.
  • Twitter
  • FaceBook - Check out FaceBook for Blogging and other writing groups.
  • RedGage

HubPages - Personality, Content, and Promotion

But what about Hubbers - those who are not professional chefs and actors?

It is clear that to success you much develop an appealing personality in your writing, just as you would in any profession. See the embedded link for pointers. All of the bloggers an dHubbers mentioned above have done so.

If you have a blog, it is best to have it focus on a niche topic that is popular with the general public that reads and responds to blogs. The ads displayed on your blog should target the same topic and audience. If the topic you choose is not one that can generate higher-paying ad clicks, then the income generated will be lower than you might wish.

Amazon.com ads can feature several more options than only books. Look through the Amazon departments and see for yourself how many items may match or compliment your blogging and add income. When you choose books, choose a combination of hardback, paperback, audio book, Kindle or other eReader editions. Similarly, films and TV episodes are often offered in DVD, Blu-Ray, and sometimes VHS and full screen or widescreen versions. Music can be chosen in CD, CD single, or instant download (often at 99 cents). HubPages and Blogger both offer Amazon as an affiliate.

I don't know much about adding eBay to a blog, but on HubPages, you add an eBay capsule and choose up to 6 items based on key words or a particular seller's ID and keywords. Others that have blog experience with eBay might share it in the Comments below.

Kontera in-line ads program works very well on blogs. Another such program is Chitka, which you could also use on a blog.

AdSense has been useful on HubPages and may be incorporated into your blog as well.

As you continue to blog and read Internet materials, you may find additional affiliate programs for income producing on your blog.

HubPages and Blog Content

This HubPages Programs encourages new writers and Best Hubs are usually:

  • Somewhere in the range of 800-1500 words long. I look for 800+ words or a bit more. The majority of the general public does not enjoy reading 800+ words of straight text, so split it up into 2 or 3 text capsules.
  • Reading grade level of text -- Romance novels are written at grade 6, newspapers at grades 6 to 8. Write at least grades 8 to 12 (check this with Microsoft Word).
  • We look for at least one photo or other graphic image and/or one or two videos. I personally look for two or three photos or one photo and one video.
  • A Google Map capsule is great if it fits your topic.
  • Links - Add highly relevant links in a links capsule or as in-line text, which is better.
  • Amazon and eBay capsules - Don't overload a Hub with products, but the more you write, the more items you can fit in well. In addition, the pictures of the products add color to your Hub.

TOPICS

What topics are the hottest topics for blogs and Hubpages? Because of interest and controversy, politics and religion certainly draw a lot of comments and attention, but these may not be for you. Look at the HubPages Topic Bank for ideas. You can write on a variety of topics, but if you choose one or two to highlight, you will be ,more successful.

I chose one for beginning:

  • Business and Jobs; and after several Hubs about this, I used HubPages Programs to write several more in each of
  • Health and Medicine
  • American History and Native American Nations
  • Food Anthropology, cuisine, ingredients, and recipes
  • Politics and Social issues.
