Hubpages the New Squidoo?

I have seen some comments recently about using Squidoo and increasingly HubPages for Internet Marketing - there is more and more talk about HubPages in the Internet Marketing forums so I thought I would get in first.

Unfortunately most of the people who join HubPages for Internet marketing purposes get themselves banned in short order - why? They don't understand Hubpages and more importantly the Hubpages community. So if you would like to know how not to get your hubs flagged and yourself banned please keep reading. If you are already happy at HubPages but would like to make more money keep reading too - its a jungle out there you have to be careful!

Bloggerunleashed: The G-Rated Version

Internet Marketing - A Dodgy Industry !

I have attempted to make a full-time living on the Internet via Internet Marketing and have so far failed to make any significant money. I did a lot research though and read a lot of blogs and learnt a lot about SEO and backlinks and Google Page Rank and whole lot of other stuff I didn't know before.

I also found a huge amount of rubbish out there - just Google "make money online" if you don't believe me. A lot of people make money off other people's desperation to be self-employed and I find that despicable. It made me question the whole Internet marketing industry - some of which got in early and are now some of the "big names" who now make a fortune trading on those names selling "their secret" invariably selling information which either available for free or no longer works because the Internet moves on so quickly. Even worse every second person who decides to make an income online starts in the niche of - you guessed it - on-line marketing - so they charge people to sell stuff that doesn't even work for them!

So as a public service for anyone who is considering learning how to make a full-time income on the Internet: - please start with the 3 blogs listed to the right: these guys appear to be for real. They are very different they don' t always agree - but you can read and learn for FREE! And no none of them pay me anything.

Warning - bloggerunleased is a video blog and the language is anglo-saxon, I would say not for family consumption but most kids use that language - just not in front of their parents - so you have been warned!

What do I know about HubPages and Internet Marketing

So who the hell is Lissie and why should you read anything I write here? I've been on Hubpages since about Sept 2007. I have a consistently had a high author hubscore (this is important see below) and have made some income by writing in their Flagship Hub program where they pay authors for hubs written on a specific topic and to a specified standard. In a recent contest here my hubs were picked for the best fo the day. I believe that I have been reasonably successful on HubPages as an author, and it's my only site where my income goes up every month!

What is HubPages

It's similar but different from Squidoo. Like Squidoo it provides a platform where you can publish a webpage. They share revenue from Adsense, Amazon and Ebay sales.

Technically there are of course differences, Squidoo is the earlier site and HubPages was established presumably with a business plan to take Squidoo on in a similar market. If you are familiar with one getting up to speed on the other is not difficult.

There is however a very important difference: HubPages does not allow overally promotional hubs. That is if your hub is just an advertisement for another site/E-Book/off line business it will get flagged and you will eventually get banned if you don't play by the rules.

Or your HubPages! It's Free Too!

HubPages: How not to get Banned

Now its not difficult to setup a hub - click "create new hub" set a name and URL, enter some tags click continue open up the text capsule cut and paste some text, hit save and then click publish. That's it. So please don't buy the $40 E-Book that will show you how to do this - I wish I was joking! Not even if its a special one time price of $10! There are heaps of good hubs on the mechanics of hubbing!

However if you actually want your hub to last more than a day or 2 before it gets flagged as spam, and you want to build your reputation as a HubPages author so that your hubs are actually read you might want to try the following steps:

  1. Join up - if you haven't already feel free to follow the link and let me earn my %!

  2. Fill in your profile information - if you don't bother to add a photo, a profile and indicate where you live it doesn't sound like you are serious about being at HubPages. Also you are missing an opportunity to promote your other sites. Also if you get a decent author score you will also get a decent page rank on your the profile page too.

  3. Write a hub. Follow the rules - don't spam. Unlike Squidoo your hub cannot be just a promotion for your Clickbank product, E-book or other website. It has to be a complete article in itself - it has to contain useful and unique content. You can still have links - but make sure they are relevant and you cannot link more than twice to the same domain. The reader shouldn't HAVE to follow the link to get value from your article.
  4. A hub isn't just a plain text article. Well not if you want most people to read it it's not. Most people scan most easily a narrow column of text, so write in 2 columns or use links and other capsules to squeeze your text column. Don't link to the same domain more than twice in a hub. A cloaked link will count as a link to the same domain.
  5. Add at least 1 photo: the first photo will show in your summary on pages such as "hot" "latest" "best" hubs - if you don't have a photo then your profile photo will be used, if you don't have one of those either you are telling me I can't be bothered to read your hub.
  6. Use at least 2 text capsules - usually lots more. If you only use 1 the second Adsense block will fall right at the bottom of the hub, below the fold. It also makes it easier to make the hub look attractive.
  7. Don't publish 24 hubs in the first 24 hours. And don't use an article re-writing software to re-write the same article 24 times and publish it 24 times with different titles. The machine may think it's different - humans can tell its the same. By monitoring the "hubtivity"page those same humans can monitor and flag you.
  8. Don't write a hub and then go the forums and post : I just wrote my first hub what do you think? Particularly don't do this when you haven't even bothered to spell-check your work. Your profile shows that you joined 2 hours ago and that this is your first forum post - why would I care about your hub? If instead you contribute to the forums, or leave a comment on someone else's hub, or become their fan then they may well feel inclined to comment on our hub.

A Promotional Hub which obeys the TOS

The link to the right is a hub I wrote promoting another site of mine. It fulfils both the letter and the spirit of the HubPages TOS. it's a complete article which adds value for the reader even if they don't click the link. There are only 2 links to the domain in question. The photos are relevant and entertaining (IMHO!) There are other relevant quality links (down the bottom I don't necessarily want to loose my buyer to them! ) and a news feed which keeps the article updated automatically.

Interesting footnote: I had the site promoted by this hub up for a week before I wrote the hub and it was still not indexed in google. A few hours after publishing the hub the site had 8 pages indexed in the big G .... coincidence?

What is a Hubscore

An Author has a hubscore - see mine by looking at my picture on the top right of this hub. It varies but is over 90. When you first start yours will be low and change a lot as you publish more hubs. My hubscore moves between 94 and 98 usually and is therefore reasonably stable.

Each Hub also has a Hubscore is the number in red to the right of the title. The hubscore of a hub starts low -this hub started at 48 when i published it - its probably higher now. I've had some hubs hit 100 and others never make it past 60 - it mostly depends on the traffic.

Hubscore and Back Links

Hubscore important because if you are using HubPages for backlinks because HubPages themselves say: "We've recently taken the step of applying NOFOLLOW to the links in hubs that have a HubScore below 50, and to all the hubs of authors with an author score below 75."

How to Increase your Hub Scores.

  1. Search for some hubs on a similar topic to yours - write a sensible comment on them - do NOT add the link of your hub -your profile will link to it anyway. Look for hubs and hubbers with higher scores - commenting on them will increase your author score.

  2. Drive some traffic to your hub - this makes the most difference to your hubscore.
  3. In my experience being helpful in the forums seems to get you fans, fans not only increase your hubscore but a fan is emailed everytime you create a new hub - you get more readers. Then tend not to be the readers who will make you money but they will email your hub to their friends and the traffic will still up your hub's hubscore too.

HubPages has something to Offer You

As an internet marketer HubPages has a lot to offer - in particular any hub I write is generally indexed in google within 24 hours - sometimes in 12! I get good page rank on my older pages and I get lots of backlinks - the internal backlinks seem to work very well at hubpages.

Hubpages lets you test out keywords with no cash down. HubPages will even give you some promising keywords if you think about who is asking in the requests section and the flagship section!

HubPages lets you get way, way off topic - every IM expert on blogs will tell you to keep your blog focussed - well mine isn't and I can assure you it doesn't pay! Here in HubPages I write on a variety of topics and I am rewarded for it - that's nice.

It has some downsides - after all its not your site. You can't control where the Adsense links show on your page yieldbuild does that. You can' t write about gambling or adult themes - I think Adsense bans those topics as and HubPages makes money from Adsense they ban them too.

HubPages is a Community

If you want to benefit from HubPages become part of the community. Not everyone is here to make money, some write poetry, some write about War of Warcraft, some about history. If you want to write about Internet Marketing and use HubPages to make money that's OK.

Take the time join the community, read, comment, participate, you might even have fun!

Good advice, Lissie!

HubPages is just one small part of an overall internet marketing strategy, but it is easy to do it badly and find yourself missing out on the benefits, if not banned altogether.

Let's hope everyone reads your Hub in time to save them from posting duplicate content, spamming the forums, and publishing advertorials!

Yes it was a bit of a double hitter this one - stop some of the crap in the forums and hopefully get some of the good guys out there some more info on HP's! BTW I have just checked and 10min after publication this hub is #2 for "internet marketing hubpages" - that's impressive even for HubPages! I sometimes wonder if publishing in the middle of the night US time helps us Anstipodeans!

Great hub Lissie! I am one of those who are not here to make money so I appreciate the helpful tips to newbies that come running through and splash their money making links all through the hubtivity! LOL. Out of over 70 hubs, I have 1 that is commercial and it was an answer to a request for an MLM you are involved in. Didn't make sense to profile the business with no link so I put 1 at the bottom. Other than that, I try to keep my self serving links in my profile. If they want to find out about it, they'll find it. Just seems to work better for me and I can concentrate on the writing at hand. You have some great hubs and I always look forward to reading them. Keep up the great work!

The points you make are spot on:

"so they charge people to sell stuff that doesn't even work for them!"

I gave up reading "Take Money Online" blogs some time ago, but I am subscribed to a couple of the ones you mention, its about time the scammers were called out.

I dont like putting my pic online... a privacy thing... and I really like boxers!

Yeah those video posts are a pain, I prefer to read, but its his blog to do with as he chooses and the content is good.

Its about time people started bringing the "Take Money Online" snake oil crew to task!

But, in my experience IM blogs call scams out routinely to gain trust with their readers before hitting them with a scam of their own... hopefully these blogs are different!

Another excellent Hub, Lissie, to guide and protect us. This is another reason I'm an avid fan of yours. And yes, you and a couple of others on Hubpages give guidance in how to create hubs, for which we relative newcomers are very grateful! Wise words - People do need to understand the culture and subtleties, as well as concrete guidelines, of a community before diving into the deep waters. And we're all tired of being scammed and spammed. Hubpages is a clean oasis in the midst of madness.

But "internet marketing" is really only ONE (multifaceted) avenue among many for gaining visibility and traffic for a legitimate business. (Key - "legitimate business") Like any tool, it's effects are good or bad according to the intents, purposes, and execution of the user. My interest is in helping caregivers, but I have lost $thousands trying to discover the best ways to reach them. And yes, too much of the environment is IM'ers selling to wanna-be's.

That being said, I have found some fabulous, ethical guys out there who have legitimate businesses and teach appropriate ways to use the various tools - the right way, no spamming, in a win-win personal or business situation that helps people. People such as Ken MacArthur ("Impact") with a giving heart and keen mind. People such as the brilliant minds in StomperNet and Smarts. To stay on top of what's happening out there - new social sites you might want to visit and late-breaking internet news - there's Brad Fallon's daily video "The Freeline Report" - web 2.0 in under 2.0 minutes. Don't overlook Paul Colligan for excellent information on podcasting and ubersyndication, or helpful Sherman Hu for blogging, video, and more.

So there are some good guys and some helpful resources among all the noise, confusion, and abundant hype. And the good guys say what Lissie just did - Do not SELL on Hubpages, do add unique and valuable content, be a good member of the community, don't link spam (but do share helpful links as resources, as Lissie did above)... be honest, helpful, real... and if people like you and what you have to say, they will find you and want to do business with you.

You want to talk about this *desperate buyers* syndrome...check this out - it makes me sick.

http://www. desperatebuyersonly. com/

I put in the spaces in the link so she doesn't get any MORE coverage!!

"Desperate people - people with throbbing problems, pressing issues, and insane drives - buy on impulse. Desperate people buy on impulse because they're in an emotionally charged state-of-mind or state-of-being and they want to get out of it.

So when you create information products for desperate people, you change the dynamics from being the person who's doing the chasing - (as you have to do when selling a typical how-to product) - to becoming the person who's constantly being chased."

PLEASE do NOT buy this **guide** - it SUCKS - not worth 10 cents.

Gee, Lissie, I didn't see the Warrior Forum post referenced above. No time to go there and wade through stuff.

However, I have observed that Tiffany Dow is a great copywriter who has worked behind the scenes for many, many "authors" and marketers. I have seen a lot of her work - really helpful, well researched, well written, engaging articles and pages. I have heard reports of how she has reached out and helped lots of people, too. So I believe that Tiffany will be a great addition to this community!

As for tutorials, sometimes novices want a helping hand who shows A-to-Z how to do things, all in one place, instead of having to go to forums, find different people's articles, etc., to piece it all together. Sometimes that's what it takes to get a newbie off dead center to actually DO something! Tiffany's Squidoo ebook was the hand-holding that got me going there... and experience on that venue gave me the "courage" to come to Hubpages when I learned about it. So I fervently believe there is a value and a place for such things.

Hi Lissie

Just wondered how you decided on your 3 "trusted" internet marketers.

GerryM

Lissie profile image

Lissie  says:

Caregiver: I haven't read any Ebooks on Squidoo - have done a few lenses but that's about it. If you found the EBook you bought worthwhile and a shortcut to gettin started thats great. The debate started on the forums here because the so-called innocent question of a newbie turned out to be an experienced author and marketers asking for info for an EBook - people felt used. I was personaly annoyed because coincidentaly posted this hub on the same topic - for free. - I hate it when people are convinced they have to spend money on something that they don't.

Gerry: I spent 4 months last year full-time trying to make an income (my definition $1000/week) on the internet. I went back to work part-time this year because I figured out it was going to take longer than the 6 months deal I had with my partner. As I realised I was "failing" I got more and more desperate - now I wasnt starving, in danger or loosing my home or anything serious - but I have always worked and got paid well and my ego was on the line to make some money. I knew that people to make full-time livings on the internet. I knew I had the technical and writing skills to make this work - I just couldn't put it all together. I read alot - I found the main forums, the more I read the more pissed off I got - I saw most people making money from telling people how to make money while making all there money from selling their ebook/subscription whatever. Teaching Sells is one of the catch crys - get people to pay to be taught - even if what you are teaching them is to go out and teach some other people the same thing ..... It all stunk to high heaven as far as I could tell. I did however find Courtney Tuttle - I use his WP themes and wrote on one of my hubs about using a WordPress blog and using Adsense. What did Court charge me for that - nothing. Did I have to sign up for his blog or email - no nothing. The guys seemed to have been around a bit and made some sense. He launched bloggingzoom late 2007 and I found a whole lot more info but by that stage I was concentrating on writing Flagship Hubs here and realising that IM was not for me. I came accross Vic (bloggerunleashed) more recently but the 3 of them are obviously mates - I was subscribed to his feed but not actually reading it because he had gone video - which is right pain for my internet plan. I saw the title of a post and was intrigued. I ended up listening for hours and coincidentally he asked about Hubpages. I thought well I do know about HP - and Id rather tell him from an insiders point of view than have some marketer write the same thing. So I wrote this hub because I thought both sides (some HP writers and some Internet Marketers) have no idea what the other is about. Vic's actually inspired me again and today I got my first BANS site 1/2 done! The weird thing is that I have had heaps more internal HP traffic on this hub than I normally do, and about the amount I expected from the obvious external sites I linked to - so obviously there is a huge interest is IM within the community.

This Hub has some helpful advice. We are relative newcomers to Hubpages, and are still experimenting. It has been fun to write on different topics, and we have been impressed with how helpful other contributors have been. We have our own website, and the things we have learned on Hubpages have (we think) improved the quality of our site. Also, it has improved our web 'presence'.

Very good information! I think that a lot of internet marketers become so overwhlemed in 'becoming rich' and 'making money' that they forget what Internet marketing is about and that is establishing relationships. You can not make any monety, anywhere, be it from home or at an office without being sociable. That being said, hub pages is a social site. They should enjoy the time that they have here and establish key relationships with the hubbers out there. Hey! you would probably learn a lot more!

Kudos on this hub! You get a thumbs up from me!

Lissie,

Good for you. I have not bothered getting involved in the current internet marketers mutual masturbation thread in the forums, and noticed the latest one got shut down by Maddie before it got too silly.

Great hub. I hope you do well with it. I for one am sick to death of these "Internet marketing experts," including the one you alluded to.

There is nothing wrong with making money online, but making money from people who are desperate to make money online is a completely bullshit way of doing it. Maybe we can't get rid of all of them, but if your hub persuades one person to do it the ethical way, it will have worked.

Go get 'em. :)

Wow so many comments! Thanks eveyone for coming!

@2Patricias - yes I agree the more you are out there the better really - I love the freedom of writing on anything without worrying about how to maintain a blog on it for everymore!

@grumpy - I must admit I am not not liking Squidoo as much either - but maybe because I haven't given it enough of a go - I am definitly finding that stuff isn't getting indexed in Google even after weeks - if I want to wait weeks I might as well add it to my own site!

@dj your link is broken. BTW everyone who adds links to their comments - the links on comments are NO-FOLLOW !

@Kay - thanks for your comment - you know I have heard that "must have a relationship with your customers" line for years and just ignored it as more marketing hype - but now I think I am beginning to understand - I think if I'd written this article as my first hub on HP as newbie I wouldn't have got nearly the traffic that I have got now- why? For better or for worse I know have a "reputation" on HP :-) Scary though - just remember guys I haven't make anything more than pocket money (yet)!

@wellness Thank you!

@Mark - thanks for visiting - you are so right - there is nothing wrong with making money online - there is everything wrong with taking candy (money) from kids (newcomers) to do it!

@myGenie & Panic thanks for visiting!

Great Hub!

I did alot of research into SEO about two years ago, but as we all know - the game changes weekly, if not daily. I am still getting into the swing of things, but am trying to re-learn as much as I can.

Your hub and similar ones have given me a completely different outlook pertaining to publishing for the web. More often than not, giving something away for free becomes much more beneficial that charging even a modest fee.

I freely give out advice. As a consultant, that is not always a good thing (as my wife tends to point out), but I still enjoy helping others get a step ahead. I think that Hubpages will give become a great venue through wich I will be able to help others, and in turn, maybe help myself!

Hi Lizzie,

guess you must be somewherebetween Tasmania and Iceland at the moment.Like your Authority Hub on Hubbing for Newbies.Have you anything to say on the rash of

purely photo hubs that contain no content whatsoever?

Here's another person who should get banned ..utilising the name of many U.S. States and tacking on a key word to the hub title that then contains nothing at all about the subject.

I won't identify the hubber just yet but it really makes me want to puke when I go to look at a hub with a topic I am interested in and then another and then another only to find nothing related at all to the title.

Anyone else got views on this? Usually the hubber in question has a completely anonymous profile which always rings alarm bells for me.

I'm not entirelty sure why I have a site on hubpages. Would it be nice to make money? Sure! Who doesn't want to make money? I haven't made a dime, but I keep coming back. I get a special thrill when I see that my traffic has jumped since the last time I visited, and I'm sure that my numbers are nothing compared with seasoned pros like you.

I like your 'direct and open attitude' and especially, I like your 'sharp tongue - pen'. I totally share your view about blogging, selling eBooks, selling 'expert IM knowledge', even though, one is not expert at all. I've started more intensively with IM in August 07 and I am still learning about it, very eagerly. It is nice, how with time, I was getting more and more confident about the topic, even though, sometimes totally confused for a short time.

Hub pages are certainly part of the mix to ensure your presence on the internet!

Your caveats and concerns reminds me of the "old days" of the internet when ANY KIND of money making schemes through the web were frowned on and in fact some people were spammmmed by loyalists to keep the web clean from commerce. We went into a cycle when it seemed that ideal was swept aside and super spammy/junky websites appeared with no thought in content, just money. Now I see some of the old concepts come back where reputation, information providing and other sharing aspects become more inportant. Now it it just may happen that you sell something as well related to the information you are sharing, but you are not pushing people to buy a product as they walk accross the threshold of your domain. Here here for your valuable thoughts!

Now under the tutelage of the "Big 3" I have faith that I can make this thing work.

Thanks Lissie! Great info. I'm just checking out the 3 blogs you have linked to.I like what you are saying about the "big names" in internet marketing.

In my opinion, there are many "big names" in IM out there that are claiming to make a lot of money (often showing a print screen as proof) and then they're selling you their "big secret". However, they make most of their money with a huge list that they have built over the years. And that's something you can't copy within 24 hours.

@Raky - you dont need to cloak a reference to your hub :-)

@ JohnT - I agree -also once you learn the trick to drive traffic to your sites it doesn't really matter what type of site they are blog: adsense: ebay whatever!

@asci -93 is prettyreasonable - and also pretty hard to get past - takes a bit of time :-)Also most people who dont spamstart at prodigy - sorry !

@ Christine glad you found it useful

@ Webgolfer I think the whole list buidling thing is really a pile of b..sh..t ! Because once you have the list the ideal is to sell absolutely everything to them. The great thing about the 3 blogs I link to is that they are not selling you anytjhing -sure they get a % if you buy the recommended tools/hosting etc but I think that is a pretty fair exchange

I read one of your commentors said how long to read .

My comment took twice as long as I read all the comments. Some times they give some excellent advice.

Yesterday I joined the new Ebay Partners. Not particulary worried whether I earn their 20Cents. to date I have not strived to earn any money. One day maybe.

Tell me as I am a complete stranger to Computer talk what does all those letters telling all of us from where you are. Now I can not find them. I am a little slow.

Again thanks for your valuable information.

I read 90% of your hubs and 99% are magic.

thank you

A minor comment about your Croc. Last night there was a talk subject on Television interviewing a producer on a new adventure story.

They could not aford to go to the Northern Territory to film the whole Film.

They went up there shot a couple of photos of two large crocs and then did all the action shots of the film in a suburb of sydney.

May be if I could remember his name or even the channel, we were on I will tell him about yours, as it was bigger.

Again thank you

Hy Lissy

Liked your Hub, thumbs up.

I just signed in to HP after several month in Internet Marketing, and as a Member from the Wealthy Affiliates. We learn that Article Marketing, Squidoo, Hubpages etc. are a great way to work online, and ultimately to make money.

I'm sorry that you haven't made any money yet, but I'm sure you will get there with a little guidance. I make more or less. I'm not yet where I would like to be, but I will reach my goal.

What makes me always a little bit sad is the accusation of spamming. I understand the folks who are looking at a page overloaded with affiliate links, then they are right. But this page will not make any money so the person who made it has not that much experience about how IM works.

I think about people like me and you who try to make a living online, and work hard for this. We research a lot, build websites, select products and try to offer for people some products to help them with something. I think that's noble, and the accusation to be a spammer heart me always a little. But that's life.

Again, great Hub, I still need to make my first and will use your information for sure to not get flagged right away.

Hi Lissie,

re point #8 in your excellent hub about not getting banned from hubpages, in which you state

"Your profile shows that you joined 2 hours ago and that this is your first forum post - why would I care about your hub"

So - are you implying that I, as a new hubpages member, should not be posting to the forums?

And that because I'm new here, nobody would interested in what I have to say?

I can understand that as a new member here, I have to pay my dues, and earn credibility.

But to say that by participating in forums as a new member, I'll be increasing my chances of being banned sounds wierd to me.

Perhaps I've misunderstood. Please clarify if this is the case.

Cheers, Eric G.

Well what I said was: don't post a hub and then immediately ask for comments as your first contribution to the forums. That's trying for the take before the give. Recently on the forums a newbie asked some questions and got some answers: I was so impressed with his attitude I became his fan before he published anything - thats a first for me! If you are having problems getting your first hub up or whatever sure post: but the usual post is "I just published XYZ what do youse all think" and personally I think I am tired of it!

Excellent, excellent, excellent! I've been quietly watching things in the IM world for a while now. It's a vicious, dog-eat-dog world out there sometimes. I rather like the nature of Hub Pages, and feel protective of this environment. I don't want HP to become another resource overtaken by Internet Marketers. If it does, it would be no more fun for me, that's for sure. Thanks for the great info here, Lissie!

This is a great post, I came to Hubpages to promote my other sites and affiliate programs but quickly learned and I have change completely. All I am thinknig of doing now is writing great content as I love the hubpages community and proud to be in it.

Hi Lissie,

What a great hub. I came to HP via Squidoo and still do lenses.

Tiffany Dow has been very helpful and has come alongside to hold your hand when necessary. Another person who has helped in Squidoo is Fluffanutta. He is great at programming various bits to make things work better.

Keep up the good work.

Blessings.
