A hookah or a shisha is a single or multi stemmed glass based water pipe for smoking.The hookah originated in india and then was developed further by people of Turkey and Iran. Today we have shisha lounges and parlors where one could go and relax and enjoy shisha/hookah.

It is used for smoking herbal fruits and tobacco and considered healthier than smoking.

When smoking tobacco became very popular in India at the period of Mughal emperor Akbar, a physician from Baghdad, In the court of Mugal was concerned of the ill effects of tobacco and developed hookah, in which air passes through water and is purified.

The hookah was originated in india, became very popular among the noble men and was a province of the wealthy and affluent.The hookah became a matter of prestige !

The hookah has since became less popular.But now it has come back with a new punch to it and catching the attention of every one.Cafe's, restaurants are offering hookahs/shishas as a new trend and these parlours are mushrooming in most of the popular places.

Smoking mollasses in hookah with or without tobacco is very popular now.You can choose to smoke shisha with only fruit mollasses and avoid tobacco completely.

Koyilandy is a small fishing town in the west coast of India once made and exported these shishas.

A hookah is made up of five to six components, four of which are essential for its function.

>The bowl or head of the hookah-:its the container made out of clay or marble to hold the coal, tobacco during smoking.

>Windscreen-:It's a perforated cover which rests on the bowl area.

>Hose-:Its the slender pipe from which the smoke is to be drawn for smoking.

>Body-:Its a hollow tube, bowl is to be attatched on top.At the bottom there is a downstem that is submerged in water.The point where the body meets the water jar is sealed with a gasket.

>Water jar-:Smoke passes through the body and out the downstem where it bubbles through water. The body of the hookah sits on top of the water jar.

>Plate-: Its an ashtray which is fixed just below the bowl.

Some home made shisha recipes to make and enjoy your own shisha. You can exclude tobacco from the recipe as shisha can be smoked with or without tobacco.

The things you need-:

>Edible glycerin

>Tobacco

>Honey or mollasses

>Fruits or flavors of your choice

Either you can cook fruits and add honey, mollasses and tobacco or marinate finely chopped fruits and tobacco in honey or mollasses and glycerin.

Mango shisha-:(marinated) Finely cut mango pieces and mix with tobacco, mix the honey and then the glycerin evenly.cover and marinate for 6 to 7 hours, you can fill the base of your hookah with mango juice and ice.

Banana shisha-:(cooked) It can also be prepared by cooking bananas, adding tobacco till it reaches a good consistency and add mollasses or honey.

The ratio of the ingredients is -20% flavor or fruits, 30% tobacco, 25% glycerin, 25% honey.

You can use kiwi, apple, lemon, chocolate, blueberry, strawberry, peach, pineapple, orange, banana, cherries, watermelon, vanilla etc !

likewise you can fill the base of the hookah with cola, mango or any other fruit juice!
