The Many Uses Of Hair!
83Hair, Hair Everywhere!
What is hair anyway?
Hair is the body covering of mammals growing through the dermis.
It is made up of a protein called Keratin and amino acids.
Hair: A worthy commodity!
Beautiful and plentiful Hair has been, and is a most sought after commodity in the human sector of mammals.
Hair: To Have Or Not To Have!
Well by saying "...it is sought after" I mean to say it is wanted on the top not so much further down on some chins (definitely not on the female one). Still keeping with the girlies and going further south, pits, legs, etc... the hair or fur is scraped, creamed or ripped away by the roots.
Hair: Worth Mega Bucks!
Hair is a multi billion dollar industry world wide. Job opportunities in hair are many. The hairstylysts being the most obvious. Then there are the chemists that work out the proper haircare products and dyes. Mechanical and technical careers are a mega part of the 'hair-movement' when you consider the many types of cutting and styling tools that are used on hair. Scissors, manual and electrical razors, hair dryers and curling irons, hair straighteners. Even the sewing sector comes into the mix by manufacturing hair-scrunchies, bands, bows etc.

Hair in entertainment and music
Not even the entertainment and music field has to feel left out as there are many productions focusing around the fuzzy stuff. The musicals 'Hair' and 'Hairspray'. If you remember the movie 'Shampoo' with Warren Beatty you're as old as me. Some of the hair-band groups Montly Crue, Poison, Skid Row just to mention a few from the top of my head....
I can't get no satisfaction No satisfaction.... with my hair
Head-Hair is one of those things that most are not satisfied with. Either too straight, too curly, too fuzzy, too dark, too gray, too thin, too.................. therefore it is nurtured, fertilized into growth , colored, straightened, permed into curls, trained into forming helmets, scrapped off with sharp implements or removed by the roots by high tech lazer treatments.
The lack of is either treated with plugs, rugs, comb-overs or embraced with a spit and polish. (Mind you, according to one of my Dads favorite sayings "There is no such thing as a bald head, only one with a forehead that reaches the ass-end... translated from Hungarian)
Hair perspectives!
Tell me honestly when was the last time you let your hair down? That's what I thought, so why don't you keep your hair on for crying out loud don't tear your hair out by the roots, it's not as if it's a hair raising affair, even though you might think your hair is standing on end and that your hair is on fire but believe me you don't want to be splitting hairs over it all because it really is only a bad hair day, but I think it's as fine as frog hair however it really runs against the hair grain when you say you want me to run my fingers through your hair weave when in fact I should be using the hair of the dog that bit you instead.
The List Of Uses For Hair:
15 Common uses for Hair!!!
- Warmth: first and foremost the 'noggin' needs to be kept warm (can be replaced by toque)
- Trophy: scalp on the belt (attractive to accessorize any casual outfit especially great with deer skin garments)
- Garden fertilizer: aerates dirt when mixed with clay (collect by the garbage bags full from the local barber and hairstylists shops---a green alternative to save the landfill sites)
- Veggie protector: sprinkle hair around vegetable garden twice during growing season to keep rabbits and deer from stealing the crop (collect by the garbage bags full from the local barber and hairstylists shops---a green alternative to save the landfill sites)
- Building Material: Birds like to use it in their nest fabrication. It was also used as an additive to plaster walls, all for strenghts.
- Music: Horsetail-hair perfectly strong for bowstrings for the Violin bow
- Fabric/Upholstery: Horse-Hair-Cloth as an interfacing for suits and coats, stuffing in furniture hair mixed with jute and hemp was a norm yesteryear. Soft animal hair used in the making of felt for hats etc
- Ladder: For directions on how this item can be used you need to contact Rapunzel 'www.Rapunzel-let-your-hair-down'. (If she's in a bad mood and says "not by the hair of my chinny chin chin" try, try and try again.)
- Luck Forecaster: In Poland if you pass 3 pure red-heads in a row you will be rich because you will win the lottery.
- Boy or Girl Forecaster : This one has a 50% accuracy rate--- if the hair on the expectant mother grows faster then it did before it is a sure chance of 50 % of being a boy. ( the nursery will look awesome in a mellow butter yellow or a snazzy light mint green just in case its either a boy or a girl)
- Weather Forecaster: If the cats bushy tail is up and the hair on it instead of standing up on end is flattened to one side that means it's windy.
- Love meter reader:In France a bat in the hair will tell of a disastrous love affair (bat is called chauve-souris in french translated meaning bald mouse--- in all honesty it really is not surprising, a bald mouse hanging from either male or female hair is not that appealing)
- Replacement for Psychiatrist: In Missourri folklore tells that a bat in the hair leads to insanity (no doubt)
- Strength: Hair stands for immense strength (just ask Samson he had none after he received a fashionable hair cut)
- Magic: A mermaids magic is in her hair (next time you see one sitting on a rock at the ocean side ask her, with all that salt water I would really like to know how they keep their hair so healthy and soft looking)
- Humor---Plants:Stool Pigeons
- Computer Antivirus Protection!
First off, let me admit I'm a yesteryear technology buff. I actually know how to set the timer on the VCR. Woops, I guess they're called DVD players now. Up until recently I used the computer at my... - Walk a mile in my paws!

Cool hub, Zuzsy! I actually thought about doing a chia pet wig for the follicularly challenged. Glad to see you got the chia in there.
Fun hub, Zsuzsy.
There's something weird going on with your first photo group (a lot of empty space with tiny pics hanging there) - and one of them is too large and out of focus.
hee hee...fun hub!
Great hub and very interesting! Why does it keep rabbits away from the veggies?
Great hub. It´s always nice to learn some more uses for hair :)
@ Isabella: I would guess it is the human smell that keeps them away ;)
Like you said, better late than never! Thaks for joining the HubMob and e looking out for this week's topic here in the Forums....keep up the great Hubs!
BT! I've always loved the Chia's especially the "hair-growing" heads. Thanks for taking a look.

Isabella! Super of you to come by. The hair around the garden is just like Funride mentioned the rabbits and deer are scared of the human scent. So it saves the produce.
Hope your okey-dokey... greetings from a really wet Ontario
regards Zsuzsy
Funride! I'm sure you're life is much better with the knowledge offered in this hub (hee-hee-hee)
How is beautiful Portugal? Glad you had a chance to come for a visit.

Zsuzsy, this was funny! Sadly, I do remember that I saw Shampoo....I just can't remember what it was about (other than shampoo, I mean). I do recall that Warren was in it yes, and Julie Christie, I think.
I loved the boy or girl forecaster part....lol....bet it's right every time!
Ryan! The hub was in the planning since Monday and would have been published then too but you know Murphy had different plans for me and sent me some company that I really wasn't expecting. I look forward to tomorrows new topic.
Let me say again that this new series is really a great idea and will be a lot of fun.
regards Zsuzsy
There is a place in India called Tirupati where for religious reasons people tend to have their hair cut their. It's the place where hair is bought and sold (in tons)for millions of dollars.
Shirley! I thought you might remember Shampoo the movie. It was an absolutely god aweful movie. I couldn't remember who the girls was in the movie but you're right it was Julie Christie.
Thanks for taking a look and for commenting.

Countrywomen! What do they buy the hair for? Thanks for coming by and for commenting.

When my mother died, she left instructions that I would not be allowed to attend her funeral unless I had a hair cut. My hair was braided and reached my waist. Well, what would you expect from a biker that was an American Indian? I found a beauty school, and asked if they would send my hair to a place that makes long hair into wigs for cancer patients. The owner ask if I was sure that was what I wanted to do. When I explained the situation, she said that she would make sure that it would be done. I got a free hair cut, my mother got her final wish and hopefully my beautiful hair made someone feel better.
Bohica! How are you long time no talk. Nice thing about hair is that it usually grows back... even the worst haircut will be regrown within a few months.
Thanks for coming for a visit. regards Zsuzsy
In our history museum we have a few examples of "hair ornaments" or "hair jewelry". bunches of hair were twisted or woven into loops or bunches to represent flowers, foliage, etc. Sometimes they were special personal gifts to friends, or memorials to remember the dearly departed.
Hair was also often added to wall plaster-- to help it to hang together.
GREAT Hub Zsuzsy Bee!!
I have a "soft" spot for hair!! (Pun intended!!) Mine, pale blonde, hangs down beyond my thighs!! Bohica, if my Mom had made the same request, she would have been buried alone!! lol!! So glad it went to good use!!
Again, GREAT Hub Zsuzsy Bee!! Blessings always, Earth Angel!!
Rochelle! Thanks for the ornament addition of uses. I do have the hair in plaster under building materials. I'm so glad you were able to drop in for a visit.
regards Zsuzsy
Earth Angel! My Mom used to say that my hair was as stubborn as me and the only way it was ever managable was when it was long and braided. Over the years it softened somewhat (I'm still as stubborn as before though)
Thanks for taking a look and for commenting. Kindest regards Zsuzsy
Great hub and the tips about decorating a room for either a boy or a girl are great. That would make another great hub in itself.
Thanks for dropping by Sweetie Pie, your right there the many ways of telling if it's a boy or girl would make a great hub. I do have a good collection of them already. The hub is in the planning stages already.
Always happy when you come for a visit. regards Zsuzsy
lmao ZsuzsyBee,
Hilarious hub especially the-Hair perspectives!
I have actually sewn on a button using a friends hair! unfortunately it did not last because of my sewing skills more than the hair strength! lol
I have read this hub after 24 hr of its publication. i can simply say its a gr8 hub.
take care Zsuzsy Bee.

Compu-smart! Thanks for reading the hub. I had so many funny ideas during the week that I wanted to add to the hub but didn't get a chance to write down, then once my company left I couldn't remember them anymore.
always glad when you pop in, regards Zsuzsy
Jupitar! Thanks for taking a look and for commenting.

Zsuzsy, thats what i love about hubpages, the ability to keep editing, and adding..:)
ps..I meant "lack" of sewing skills!...... Its such a shame I cannot edit comments! lol
What a creative use of the topic for hair, great job.
Compu-smart! Why can't you edit your comments? zs
Research Analyst! Thanks for checking out the hub and for commenting.

Zsuzsy, your Hub is incredible to me in its timing.
My mother and I both have very long blonde hair (mine is real, hers is not although it used to be ... sorry, Mom). And when you have hair this long, every time you comb or brush it, you get birds' nests which you ply from the comb or brush with your fingers.
Just today, my mother shared with me her mother's superstition about what you do with these gleanings from the head...today at my mother's I brushed my hair and threw the birds' nest to the wind. My mother said that what I did would bring bad luck, according to her mother, but I felt it would make good material for some starling's or finch's nest. So off to the wind it went. My mother laughed, and tossed her "birds' nest" to the wind as well. Turns out that her mother loved birds, but, superstition being what it is, my mother would never give the birds that little gift, until today. What a bonding moment between me and my mom!
With all that said, Zsuzsy, I loved this Hub. Such a pleasure to read what you write.
Your fan,
Sally
Sally! Those special bonding moments will be cherished even if there only over silly superstitions. Thanks for sharing. I wonder why putting your "extra" hair into the wind would mean bad luck. I just love to figure out these old folklore bits and pieces.
I'm always so pleased when you can come for a visit. regards Zsuzsy
Your list of uses of hair is priceless, every hair raising one of them! Great Hub. Thumbs up!
Thanks Dottie for coming by and commenting. regards Zsuzsy
