It is impossible to predict. However, let's generalize. My bet is the following:
if you wrote a hub a day for six months (180 hubs) and did the following:
a) Observed SEO principles
b) Wrote unique, length, flag-ship style hubs
c) Did a minimum of marketing
Then you could well be making several hundred dollars a month by the end of it. The end of the year would see you getting close to low-grade financial self-sufficiency.
The more you put it, the more you'll get out.
I agree that it is impossible to predict. Even if you write a lot of hubs, if you don't pick higher paying topics or topics that will encourage readers to click the ads, then you may not make much. There are so many factors.
I am a newbie so this is only my short-term observation.
I don't seem to get a lot of traffic through search engines if I do not promote my hubs by sending invitations to my friends or post messages in the HP forums.
Are there any other ways to generate more traffic? I'd like to know.
