Compost can be made in any container that breathes. Good air circulation is necessary for quality compost. If you are using a plastic pail, for example, poke a few small holes all around it at varying levels. A lid is also necessary. Put all your organic trimmings in this pail (no meat or bones!!!), cover and leave. Cut larger items, like banana peels, into smaller pieces for faster composting. Every couple days uncover the compost and give a really thorough stir. If compost is dry mist with some water. Compost should be barely damp at all times.
Depending on the size of your trimmings, compost can be ready in as little as three weeks to several months. As trimmings compost at different rates, take compost from the bottom of the barrel where it has dropped after a thorough mixing.
