I think America gives lip service to being a Christian nation.

Certainly the founding fathers of the USA saw themselves as Christians.

Certainly during the American Civil War both sides prayed to the same god the one true God. In God We Trust is on the money. I believe it was introduced during the civil war.

Certainly there is a section of the USA known as the Bible belt and with good reason.

Does this ad up to a very devout country? It is hard to say.

As for state being separated from religion, I have always believed this to be a very good idea. Most Australians see it as preferable. Certainly the French since the French revolution see it that way.

It's very hard to say, since every sect has its own idea of what it means to be devout, and many of them think that the other sects are by definition not devout.

I wish we could be more relaxed about the condition of other people's souls and more interested in (and honest with ourselves about) the condition of our own.

Keeping state separated as much as possible from religion is the way to go. I have worked with many people over the years and for most of them I have no idea what religion they were or are or if they were religious at all. All I cared about was if the other person was a good worker and whether or not I could get along with them. This is my Australia. It isn't a bad way to live.

Why not be relaxed about other people's souls Jeff provided they are not trying to interfere with your beliefs? Live and let live isn't a bad way to go. Those who will find their way to God will most likely not do so by someone forcing them to do so. They'll journey in their own way and their own time.

Yes Jeff who is to say who is devout and who is not? I wouldn't try to judge anyone on that one.

"Why not be relaxed about other people's souls Jeff provided they are not trying to interfere with your beliefs? Live and let live isn't a bad way to go." My point exactly. But some will argue that scripture commands us to evangelize, and that evangelism = harassing and haranguing the unbelievers, where unbelievers = anyone who doesn't follow your particular brand of heresy.

As for me, I reckon the best evangelism is a good example, and do my best to be one. I often fail. But I keep trying.

Being a good example yourself I always find to be the best argument for your beliefs Jeff so I definitely agree with you there.
