    The name "Google" originated from a misspelling of "googol",which refers to the number 1 followed by one-hundred zeros. Having found its way increasingly into everyday language, the verb "google", was added to the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary in 2006, meaning "to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the Internet."

    As Healthy8drian has pointed out, Google originated as a misspelling of the word googol which is a mathematical constant.

    However, one thing not many people know is that the mathematician who coined the term "Googol" to represent a 1 followed by 100 zero's asked a newphew of his, who was an avid comic collector.

    It just so happens that Barney Google happened to be his nephew's favourite character, who's name was a representation of his "Googly eyes"

    So the phrase "Google" is a mispelling of a mispelling of a 1930's cartoon character, which ended up being the actual spelling.

    Strange huh?

    A googol is a number - one followed by one hundred zeros. I think Google is a play on that (to show how expansive it is as a seach engine).
