Writing helps you to put your thoughts on paper or on screen, therefore allowing you to get the thought off of your mind, so you dont have to think of it so much.  They always say the best thing to do with stressful events, is either confront them, avoid them, or write them down and forget them.  It helps to keep you centered and calm and allows you to feel as though you are expressing your feelings instead of keeping them in.
On another note, you can release so much more from writing.  This allows you to be you and speak what you like.  Good thing is no one has to know if its about them or not.  You can write whatever whenever and however you like.  Its also a great way to keep your mind occupied from what is going on in your life.
Im not sure if that answers your question fully but I hope it at least helps and if you have anymore questions please feel free to ask, or feel free to express your opinion!

Personally, I find writing a great source of stress relief. I keep a daily journal and each day I write down my thoughts. If I am stressed or worried about something, I find that by writing these down, it lessens the burden and I feel that I can cope better. I also find that if I have got lots to do, or too much on my mind I can't sleep well, therefore, by writing down a list of things to do or sort out the following day, I can sleep easier. It's as though my mind is at ease as it knows that the problem will be dealt with.

I deal with a lot of stress in my life and also panic disorder that comes with panic attacks when having high anxiety. Journaling helps so much, get my thoughts down on paper. Another technique I use is when something is really bothering me I write it down then I tear it up and throw it away. It really works, learned the trick from my therapist! Meditation or prayer is very effective too!

You know, davenmidtown, to relieve the stresses of life, you are the only one who knows what causes the stresses.  Writing help to relieve the stresses but not if writing is an outlet that you usually use to make everything better.  For some, relieving the stress could involve working out, reading, traveling, cooking, singing, having a conversation or a multitude of things that separates one from sadness of discourse from feeling good about themselves or their circumstances.  Writing, however, is usually the relief outlet because it is more personal and mostly involve your personal thoughts that do not necessarily have to be shared with someone else.
