The Writing on America's Wall

America is Dying on the Vine

For years I believed God for revival in this great land of America. There are certainly smatterings of revival here and there, An individual can definitely be revived any time they choose, for revival is a choice. But what about the nation? Have you noticed the condition of America lately? She's barely breathing. Still, I believe God could send a sweeping of His Holy Spirit through this country and meet with us once again. But will He?

God has taken my message of revival to another level - that of realizing that judgment may come before revival. America is dying on the vine and the only thing that will rescue her is a complete about-face to stare squarely into the eyes of her God. I have not given up hope, but I do not see that happening any time soon.

It may very likely take persecution and judgment to get America to take a second look. There is a good chance things will get worse before they get better - but hang in there. Better times are coming.

Signs of Decay

In 1947 Sociologist and Harvard professor Dr. Carle Zimmerman published his magnum opus Family and Civilization. His study of the decay of the Greece and Roman cultures led him to make several speculations regarding the death of a society. He listed the following 11 elements that would lead to a society’s ruin. They no doubt sound eerily familiar.

1. No-fault divorce

2. “Birth dearth”; increased disrespect for parenthood and parents

3. Meaningless marriage rites/ceremonies

4. Defamation of past national heroes

5. Acceptance of alternative marriage forms

6. Widespread attitudes of feminism, narcissism, hedonism

7. Propagation of antifamily sentiment

8. Acceptance of most forms of adultery

9. Rebellious children

10. Increased juvenile delinquency

11. Common acceptance of all forms of sexual perversion (Family and Civilization, Dr. Carle C. Zimmerman)

America’s Time Has Arrived

America’s time has arrived. We can safely check off all eleven. Brad Keena in his article, Ten Signs of a Culture’s End lists ten other areas of cultural decline. Again, America can be seen in each one.

The great civilizations of the past including Greece and Rome passed through these same waters prior to their demise. Allow me to summarize Mr. Keena’s points. (Ten Signs of a Culture’s End, Brad Keena)

1. A culture that no longer worships or acknowledges God

Since the 1980’s and the introduction of political correctness, America has systematically and routinely removed God from the culture. This includes symbols such as nativity scenes, and the removal of The Ten Commandments from public sight.

2. The decline of the family

Only 40 years ago solid families were the norm. Divorce is at an all time high. The ruined children from these relationships are the next adults. One cannot give what he does not have. We are now in the second generation. Where fathers are involved, the moral authority of the father is undermined by a society that no longer embraces the structure of the family.

3. A society's low view of life

Abortion is the most glaring example of our culture’s disrespect for life claiming it as a “right”. On the coattails of abortion rides euthanasia, assisted suicide, and scientific experimentation. No empire has ever succeeded without an exalted view of life. God’s Word is still true.

4. The prevalence of base and immoral entertainment

Mr. Keena says, “In its last days, Rome had become a society with an insatiable appetite for debauchery and immorality. We could easily replace Rome with America. The sentence would still ring true. Everything from television programming, to written material, to the airways is crowded with filth.

5. The increase of violent crime among young people

Gang violence is on the rise. It is spreading from the inner cities to small towns across the United States. Death has become a major topic of thought for young people. Recent surveys indicate that death is on the minds of teens more than thoughts of the opposite sex.

6. The declining middle class

The 21st Century politicians have learned that one of the keys to reelection is to advocate more spending and government programs for the poor. The federal government redistributes wealth through taxation and programs run through the government. This has caused a shrinking number of middle class workers and an increase in women needing to join the work force.

This same scenario was seen by Russia shortly before they experienced a communist revolution.

7. An insolvent Government

Our national debt is now in the trillions and growing each day. The United States government has not been able to balance the annual budget in almost thirty years. History holds no secrets. An insolvent government cannot meet the needs of its people. Look to the French revolution.

8. A government that lives off of society's moral decay

Quoting from Mr. Keena, “The Roman civilization crumbled under the weight of an immoral and corrupt government. Over the years, our government has devised the creation of whole agencies that exist for no other reason than to manage some of the most immoral aspects of the culture. The National Endowment for the Arts and the Legal Services Corporation are examples of agencies that foster society's decline.

Within the judicial branch of government, judges accountable to no one have helped undermine the religious freedoms that were once the centerpiece of our society. Laws once protected children and families. Criminals were punished severely for rape. People were arrested for cohabitation and adultery. Sodomy, outlawed in every state, was listed in the newspaper as a ‘crime against nature.’ A couple having a child out of wedlock was ostracized, and homosexuality was as foreign to the world as walking on the moon.”

9. When the ruling class loses its will

For the most part, our elected officials do not seek the good of the country, but rather seek reelection for the purpose of extending a lucrative career. It has become about self service, not service to the people.

10. The failure of its people to see what is happening

The sad truth in the cases of failed societies is that the citizens saw the signs, but failed to act. My friend, your great nation is at the crossroads. Death is only a heartbeat away. “In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace. . . . And thou . . . hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this; But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven . . . And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. PERES; Thy kingdom is divided . . . ” (Daniel 5:5, 22-28).

America, What Has Happened?

America, what has happened? What does your future hold? America, What will you do? The past calls. The God of the Universe says in Joel 2:12-14, “Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him . . . .”

God is righteous. God is holy. Still God is merciful. The cup of His wrath is not yet filled. Might we repent of our sin! Might we cry out to Him for mercy! Might we seek Him while He can be found!

My Friend, America is at the crossroads. You are at the crossroads. What will you do?

There can be little doubt that this country is in decline. You listed many of the reasons for it. There is fear in this country like none I have seen during my lifetime, and fear leads to hate and hate broadens the division between classes. Where will it end? I don't know, but the ride is not an enjoyable one right now. Well presented!

Hi Bill,

This nation certainly is in decline. From a prophetic standpoint we know where we're headed. And you're right - it's not a good outcome. But as a child of God, I know who holds my future. Hang in there, Buddy!

Thanks again Bill for this warning that is surely needed in our land. My prayer is that the Lord will indeed send a revival in this country. We surely can't go on much longer like we are. God bless and keep up the good work.

It is a different world with sin accepted even by Christians, or professing ones because I think it is every child of God's responsibility to know the word and what is right and wrong. I had someone here at HP claiming to be Christian say homosexuals and certain Muslims who do not even believe Christ is the savoir or Son of God have as much right to Heaven as I do. Well of course they do but not as long as they live in their belief and not repent. I read a young girl at Facebook saying how much she loved her husband and she wrote this poem for him on their first date in the motel room. Well things like that do not shock anyone anymore. (I have to admit after my jaw dropped, I also laughed, but there is no shame anymore.) If Christians have anything to say about it we are the enemy, just trying to ruin everyone's good times. Peoples lives are so messed up it is hard to witness to people. They want Jesus and to go on living in sin and think it is OK. satan is having a field day today.

Hi Jeff,

As always, it's goof to hear from you , and thanks for the encouragement in some discouraging times. Still, God is at work and He's in control - nothing to fear!

Boy Jackie,

I know what you mean. It's an "add Jesus to my life" attitude instead of "Jesus is my life" - big difference. Unless God intervenes soon, I think America is on self-destruct - and no one seems to care, even many Christians like you said. Hang in there, Sister. The best is yet to come!

Bill this the best you've ever written. Too bad it's about a devastating truth. "Revival is a choice," is a face I think few consider. I think what made this hub so powerful to me was the sources you shared (what was on those lists) and the information on past super power civilizations (Rome and Greece). It all boils down to pride in our nation, a nation which has become a tower of babel. "It may very likely take persecution and judgment to get America to take a second look. There is a good chance things will get worse before they get better - but hang in there. Better times are coming." A word of hope. Thanks Bill.

Revival is repentance. The problem is that almost no one has conviction anymore. There are those who believe "revival" is coming, and others who believe that there will be nothing but apostasy in the last days. Many of Jesus' and Paul's words don't paint a pretty picture. The apostasy of hype and gimmicks that are called "revival" today is running rampant in the modern "church." It really cannot get much worse. It's time to wake up that "revival" is actually the falling away, but unfortunately many are too blind to see it. The hardest people to reach are those in the reprobate churches of man because they have denied God's truth and His warnings.

The past years have proven that any "revival" has NOT been from God. The worldly apostate "churches" are going to judged by God for denying His leading and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Man's agenda has taken precedence instead. God is judging many religious leaders right now for not heeding His multiple warnings. I have witnessed many leaders who have "crashed and burned" for their rebellion.

It is time to fear God, or face the consequences. What will it be?

Matthew 24:3-13 is here.

I believe that all those who are caught up in the churches of man will keep on promoting "revival." The delusion that things are going to get better in a broad sense is simply spiritually blindness.

"Better times are coming" will not be until the Millennium.

This is happening right now and applies to us.

The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. - 2 Thessalonian 2:8

For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. - 2 Timothy 4:3

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. 2 Timothy 3:1-5

There are many prophecies of "revival" spoken through the lens of man's doctrine in the modern "church," but are not supported by Scripture in context. America has already not heeded God's warnings; therefore, there will be no revival because the country has become an abomination and has abandoned God in every way. "Revival" just feeds the golden calf. All we have to do is simple mathematics to figure that out, but America has forgotten how to do even that.

Dear lifegate,

The following passages give an illustration of what America has become. Again, it's not a good picture. Unfortunately, they also elude to what can be expected because of such practice.

Romans 1:28-32

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

I applaud your voice and stand with you in heralding the warning. I prey for others to join the chorus and hope that we can be heard.

Blessings

Thanks for the visit and the encouragement LS. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a negative message, Equally unfortunate is the fact that it will no doubt come to pass if we don't come back to the Lord soon. And yes, it all boils down to pride. What's wrong with us anyway? It's a simple matter, and yet we ignore the only Hope we have. Have a great weekend!

Hi PandN,

I like your one word definition of revival - repentance. That is exactly what it is. It's so simple, but yet we've turned away from that very word and replaced it with a hsorter word - "I". It's all about "I", and of course we can trace that back to Isaiah 14:13, 14. Then we forget that verse 15 follows. America surely is in bad shape as we slowly sink away. Thanks for making the trip and adding to the conversation.

Good morning mattmilamii ,

"Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them." Verse 32 says it all. America can't claim ignorance. We are walking "eyes wide open" to our destruction. Thanks for standing shoulder to shoulder for this once great land.

Dear Bill,

Powerful and sad message here. I hope many will read and take heed. Many want to believe His Word, but only the parts they like as they do not want to repent and make an about face in the other direction for salvation. It will take the Nation as a whole to fall on its face before the Lord and repent. I believe in the power of prayer and pray daily for our Nation and will continue to do so. The cross is foolishness to those who do not believe for they know not of the Holy Spirit and it makes no sense to them. Until they ask the Lord into their hearts, no change will take place.

Up and more and sharing.

God bless you. In His Love, Faith Reaper

Hi Faith,

Prayer is where it's at as it can move mountains. If we as a nation would fall on our collective spiritual face, there's no telling what God would do - but sad to say that's not happening. Be sure there is a brighter day coming when King Jesus takes the throne. Thanks for the vote and share.

Excellent and interesting information about the history of civilizations that experienced such an unraveling. It really should be an alarm to us and truly is as obvious as writing on a wall.

I have to say I have been sensing the same... that this thing won't turn without difficulty which reminds me of this sobering portion of scripture...

"the cities of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to whom they offer incense, but they will not save them at all in the time of their trouble. For according to the number of your cities were your gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem you have set up altars to that shameful thing, altars to burn incense to Baal.

“So do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them; for I will not hear them in the time that they cry out to Me because of their trouble." ~ Jeremiah 11

This is in reference to God's people worshipping so many other things as the church of America most certainly does and the consequences thereof... The above verse seems hopeless but we know it's not in that repentance and restoration was is and always will be His will and part of His plan but its as if letting the people experience the difficulty without a period of rescue may be a necessary element in that being able to happen.

I have been one of God's more difficult children and I well know that sometimes His judgment is the only thing that works.

I like the exhortation of Hebrews 12 in reference to this.

“Yet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven.” Now this, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain.

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear"

I appreciate your passion and heartcry messages on this topic

Hi Graham,

Thanks for stopping by and for taking the time to read and comment, It seems that in many ways there is little difference between America and the UK. Our only hope is to turn back to the One that blessed this country as we obeyed Him. When America began to leave God out, America began her plunge into the dark. We must return. Again, thank you for your kind words and for reading.

Thanks Jackie,

God has been moving in America in 2013. This year we've seen President Obama come face to face with the truth of the Harbinger as Rabbi Jonathan Cahn preached at the inaugural breakfast. He was very clear as to what this country needs.

We've seen Bibles delivered to each senator and representative by a group of preachers, and have seen a prayer session in congress from time to time. God is good. Although there are many prayer groups in the US, I like to think that The Great American Fast had a small part in these things. Thanks for the update. If you hear anything else, please let me know.

I think corporations forcing the workers to work massive amounts of overtime is a problem. Parents aren't home for the children and they just run wild, all because of corporate greed. They work overtime only because the company doesn't want to pay for insurance for one more employee.

Most of the crime in our area is caused by young people. Mothers can no longer afford to stay home with the children and neither the father or mother are there to teach them discipline or right from wrong. I wonder what the next generation will be like.

My dear brother lifegate. Blessings to you and yours in this coming year. As we open the blinds to uncertainty and inevitable change let us rejoice always in our Lord. Eternity is here now, Amen.

Revival is always possible. Thank You Lord because with Him nothing is impossible. Yet as time moves along and the morality of the nation continues to decline scripture unfolds. Much has come to pass. I am so grateful that Jesus left us no rock unturned. We will know by Israel when it is at the back door. May God Bless Israel and our nation come back to God. He will pour out His judgment. We are so blessed to be sons and daughters of the King of Kings. We r favored. Not even the gates of hell can prevail against those that Love Jesus Christ.

I am touched with you diligent truth and heartfelt and truthful works lifegate. As always you touch many. I have been on a mission I had no clue at all it was coming my way. It is easy to see the steady decline in America as the years pass by. It is getting harder to find Christians that want to serve the Lord with their whole hearts, who aren't getting sucked into modern-day Christianity with all of its compromises. As you pointed out in this article, all of the major indicators are there that America will not be able to succeed in the future unless there is a drastic turnabout. The country declines because the people decline. It is the typical American of today that embraces the immoral culture and encourages others to depart from godliness. And where are all of the preachers in all of this? Where is the outcry against then from the pulpits? There are a few, but they are being drowned that out by all the worldly, compromised preaching. I get more truth on hub pages than I do in most church services. How sad is that? It is great that people are speaking the truth on hub pages, however.

lifegate profile image

lifegate 2 years ago from Pleasant Gap, PA Author

Good Morning deorganicchurch ,

Yes, the country is declining because the people are declining, but as you go on to say, where are all the preachers in this? The round about answer is that the people are declining because the church has declined and failed to do her job in the 21st century. We have no one to blame but ourselves.

It truly is sad that you find more truth on HP than most church services because there's very little truth on HP as well, but I am thankful for those who speak out through this avenue. Still, the church needs to rise to the occasion (and the challenge) and ignite spiritual flames again. Thanks for stopping by and adding to the conversation.

My brother Lifegate, I hear you.

You paint quite real and frightening pictures, and many of us are insecure with these times.

I repeat that I hear you. However, I'm so glad that you admit to not giving up hope. Let us be eternal optimists, my Brother. If we go to a village and things are all bad, should we move on to the next? what if things are bad there too?

It is in the dark times that we are most needed. America has produced George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson. It has produced Emily Dickenson and several great Souls and advancement in health and science, and is continuing to produce them still. Darkness cannot exist without Light. What would it fight?

So great article and good to remind us. Perhaps we can use this to intensify our own efforts to love God. Hope, sweet hope. Higher blessings.
