   Do you think the United States is a Christian nation?
   
   This is a question I tend to ask from time to time as it seems a lot of people feel that we are or that we were founded on Christian beliefs. I have also heard the argument that separation between church and state does not exist in the constitution which is correct but the following does exist in the first Amendment. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" so officially I would say we are not.

   I agree that the separation of church and state has diminished.  It is not state-sanctioned religion, although prohibited in the very words you quoted, but a more state-preferred religion.  Even though the government cannot show preference, the candidates can and is all too often seen in campaign agendas. Rick Perry's assertion that he is a Christian and the ongoing slander campaign against the President shows that religion plays too an important a role in people's lives.
   
   I don't want my elected officials base their decisions on the Bible, Quran, or whatever other religious text they prefer to use as a crutch.

   No.  There is no such creature as a Christian nation.  There are Christians in the nation, but because there is the freedom of religious belief, this is not a Christian nation.  A person has the right to be a Christian, Jew, Muslim, or nothing at all.  The Constitution says nothing about creating a Christian nation.  For the record, I'm a Christian, but I also fail to see America (or any other nation) as a Christian nation.

   No, it's not. Or rather, it wasn't originally. Sadly, we have extremists trying to change history and make it seem as if it was from the start.

   not in the least. though many claim to be christians, they are full of crap, excuse the expression. the US, like many countries, uses religion as a tool , not as a real way of life.
