In the winter, I very seldom turn on my heat. I use sweaters for general warmth and lap blankets when I sit down. There is nothing cozier than sitting in your favourite chair enjoying a hot beverage covered and warm with your lap blanket.
Turn the heat down even further when you are sleeping or out of the house. One of the best winter money savers I know.
There are a lot of ways to save energy. One of the best ways is to reduce the size of your hot water heater. In our current home, which we built, we installed a 40-gallon hot water heat and put it in a heated over-sized closet. If you put a hot water heater in an unheated room, like a basement or garage, it will have to work harder to keep the water hot. A hot water heater is normally one of biggest users of electricity. I am not familiar with the energy usage of the "hot on demand" heaters but it is my guess they use a lot of electric in a short time.
It is also important to set the water temperature to a level low enough to be practical. If you are heating water too high and then cooling it down by blending in cold water, you probably have it set too high.
I use space heaters and heated blankets so I can keep the thermostat low. To save energy in the long run make sure you home is well insulated and the windows are sealed.
Thanks for the comment about hot water heaters. I hadn't heard of that, but its a great point!
Insulation!!! Last fall I went through our house, basement in particular and used the spray foam insulation in a can to start plugging up all the gaps. This summer, since we're in need of a re-paint, I'm going to re-tape and re-insulate the window frames. Little things all of the time, slow improvements.

I was recently singing the praises of e-readers, saying how much paper they were saving. A friend looked at me and said, "You have got to be joking!" and explained how the amount of waste created by the development, distribution, and disposal of e-readers drawfed that of...
