Hailing from a little village called Iwaia along the North Coast of Popondetta, Oro Province in Papua New Guinea Nancy attended Holy Name Girls High School in Dogura, Milne Bay Province from 1981 to 1984. She took up Pre-Employment Technical Training in Hotel and Catering at Lae Technical College in 1985. She pursued a career in the hotel industry working in various hotels in the country and now is a Senior Lecturer in technical/business studies colleges within the National Department of Education in Papua New Guinea.
Born on January 7, 1968 to Paulus Berepo and Katherine Simberi both subsistence farmers, Nancy was given away for adoption to her father’s younger and only brother Cyril and christened Nancy Flora Gegera. To her workmates and many friends she is known as Nancy Karoia Uruaka. The third born from her biological family out of a very large family of twelve (nine living and three dead) has seven sisters and two brothers. She is the only one in the family who is equally educated and is the pride of the family where only a few girls from her village are educated and working at her level.
Nancy dreams of living a quiet life at her home village when she retires. She desires to appreciate an easy late life with no greater responsibilities to be bothered with and dreams of being a writer. She is a talented poet and writes about life, nature and the universe.
Nancy has lived alone since her separation from her husband in 1999 to whom she was married to for almost ten years. She has no children of her own, yet has a heart of a great mother and is blessed to have looked after and educated many. She has devoted her life to working as a teacher and takes pride in her work and spends her life between the house and the workplace. She says work steals all her time that can be spent in other aspects of life yet she does not regret in any way.
