Pro Tips

Generic URLs: another way to go evergreen!

An Argument for Generic URLs

In last week's newsletter, we touched on over-optimization penalties and how you can avoid them in part by having Hub titles that are slightly different from URLs. There is another reason why it pays to have a URL that is slightly different from your title: it allows for greater versatility!

Say you write a Hub on planting aloe vera in backyard gardens. Your title could be a nice, specific "How to Plant Aloe Vera in Your Backyard" but your URL could be "hubpages.com/hub/aloe-vera" Down the line, if you realize that a lot of your search traffic comes from people looking to plant aloe vera and use it for skin care, you could easily add more content to your Hub and change the title to "How to Plant Aloe Vera and Use it to Improve Your Skin" without your URL becoming off-topic.

This tactic is also great for product reviews, as it allows you to update years in titles and add information without making your Hub seem outdated because of an overly-specific URL. From now on, then, go for specific, long-tail titles, but generic URLs. It can make a big difference!

HubPages Interviews JillKostow

A loving mother and Money Grows on Hubs participant shares her thoughts on the HubPages contest experience

1. You have done quite well in the Money Grows on Hubs contest, winning two Staff Pick prizes and Week 4's Best Hub prize - what inspired you to join the contest?

I joined the contest for fun; I honestly didn’t expect to win.  Since my three older children are at school during the day I have some spare time when my two year old is resting.  So I figured I would take a chance in entering the contest.

2. What did you think of the other entries in the Money Grows on Hubs contest?

I didn’t get to read every entry, but the ones I did get to read I thought were amazing.  There was a ton of useful information written between everyone, and you also get to read it from many different perspectives.

3. Have you always been writing articles on Personal Finance?

I wrote a few in the Personal Finance category before this contest.  I originally started writing on HubPages about my children and their secret plans to take over my mind.  It was a way to stay sane amidst all the craziness this past summer.  I also wrote about health issues that affect my family, especially our youngest son and the ordeal we faced with him during his first year of life.

4. How many Hubs did you enter in the contest, total?  And what advice might you have to share with other Hubbers about participating in HubPages contests?

I entered 22 hubs total in the contest.  My advice would be to just go for it, because even if you do not win it is still an excellent learning experience.  It is also a ton of fun, and it is great to read what other Hubbers wrote, you can learn a lot from everyone else during the process.

5. Personal Finance aside, what do you most enjoy writing about?

I love to write about my family the most, especially the kids.  They are four balls of love and craziness, who are planning to take control of my mind.  In all seriousness, I love to write about the kids because I love them so much, and I am glad to share our experiences with others, because as parents we all go through the same or very similar experiences with each of our children!!

6. Do you think you'll participate in HubPages' next contest?

I think I will definitely be participating in the next contest!!  I can’t wait to hear the deals for what will be required, and when it will be starting.

I also want to say congratulations to all the other winners this month, and also to all the Hubbers who entered the contest!!!  Also, thank you to all the judges and the HubPages staff for running this contest.
