Pro Tips

Share Your Gratitude with Fellow Hubbers

Would you like to say thanks to fellow Hubbers, friends, and family using HubPages? Here are five ways to do just that!

  1. Write a gratitude Hub: Publish a thanks-themed Hub (e.g. 5 Things I'm Thankful For) and share a link to it via email or social media to your friends as a more detailed means of showing what you're grateful for. Seeing a published article mentioning them as something you care about will be sure to warm your buddies' hearts, and you can even make the Hub an interactive experience for your friends and family by adding polls and quizzes!
  2. Leave thoughtful fan mail for another Hubber: Next time you follow a new Hubber, take the time to leave him or her some truly thoughtful fan mail, saying exactly what it is about that person's Hubs that you think makes this Hubber worth following.
  3. Leave insightful comments: Few things on HubPages are so meaningful as insightful, honest, specific, and detailed comments. They're the ultimate way of showing your undivided attention to and respect for another Hubber's work.
  4. Reference your buddies: Another lovely way to say thanks to another Hubber is to reference his or her work in one of your own Hubs (by linking to it as a reference in one of your related Hubs) or mentioning the Hubber as an additional source. In addition to outwardly showing your respect for that writer, you're giving him or her some potential traffic!
  5. Give an offsite solute: Sharing another writer's work, be it a video, blog post, website, or Hub, on a social media site like Facebook or Twitter, is a very flattering compliment indeed! Sharing the link with a little explanation of why you think it's worth checking out only adds to the compliment.

An Interview with Matt Stark

A physical therapist shares his hobbies and professional know-how on HubPages

How did you find HubPages? What inspired you to join?

A graduate school classmate of mine introduced me to HubPages as a way to write about what I loved and to make a little extra money. She was pretty into it at the time and though it sounded great, I didn't devote the time and energy. Recently I was motivated to find ways that I could supplement my income and HubPages was the first thing that came to my mind. I got active in the HubPages community and realized it didn't take as much time and energy as I expected and it was amazing fun.

You're an excellent writer- where did you write before coming to HubPages?

I can't really say I've had much experience writing professionally or even as a top interest. I have always been a decent writer and enjoyed it, but during graduate school I really had to hone my writing skills and produce a lot of work. My writing has always been very organized and technical and it has been a great experience incorporating some style into what I write on HubPages.

You mention in your bio that you're a physical therapist and that you're currently going through a 9 month mentorship program to further master your skills. Are the physical-therapy Hubs you create a result of notes you've been taking as a part of this process?

I am always looking for ways to improve and Physical Therapy has been at the forefront lately. I tend to create Hubs about patients I see and describe things that I find helpful. I want my Hubs to come across as genuine and I feel the best way to do that is from experience.

You've got some great Hubs on drinks (beer, cocktails, coffee, etc.). What inspired them? Would you consider yourself a foodie?

I have really been into craft beer for the last few years and have always been a lover of coffee. I do like whiskey quite a bit too. I wanted to share the unique experiences I have had over the last several years while living in San Francisco. I would describe myself as a wanna-be foodie. I love food and love to cook and love to eat even more. I'm not sure I'm any good at it, but food is definitely a passion of mine.

When you sit down to write a Hub, is there a certain process you follow? Do you write a Hub in one sitting, or over a longer period of time?

For the most part, I write a Hub in one sitting. Sometimes if I am busy it might take a few short sessions. My general process is to start a new Hub and just begin writing. I worry about organizing later. If I am really stuck, it helps me tremendously to title each text capsule first so I have a sort of outline. I add photos and other detail right before I publish. The great thing is, I can always go back and make a change. I am a fan of just getting the information out there and taking action now. Refinement can come later.

What do you plan on writing about next?

I am very interested in the 30 Hubs in 30 Days challenge. I am quite busy with my Physical Therapy training, so it might be all PT related. Keep an eye out for that in December. This week i might keep the topic light.
