A passionate gamer, geek, and writer shares more about his HubPages and literary exploits
How did you hear about HubPages? What made you want to join the community?
I heard about Hubpages through Google. I was looking for a website to post articles on to hone my writing skills. I did some research and met a few people who talked highly of HubPages as a community where people come together and share information. I knew it would be a good way to post articles about things I love and get feedback based on what people thought.
You've written almost 50 Hubs, sometimes publishing four in a day. Where do you get this productivity from?
Over the last 5 months I've been recovering from Colon Surgery and I've been on bed rest for the most of it. It's very easy to write a series of articles when you have no choice but to lie in bed. Of course, I could just play video games all day, but I have a true love for writing so I don't find it difficult at all to spend 5 to 6 hours writing.
You've written a lot about video games, going deep into their world and history. What is it about these games that you love so much?
I have asked myself this question many times and have also been asked it by my family many times. I think, as a fiction writer, I love these stories because of their ability to grab you and pull you into a world that they created. Most of the stories that really capture me are the ones that have millions of branches off of the main story where you can learn things about other people during this time that don't necessarily have anything to do with the main character(s). I love deeply complex stories that you could spend days reading about and immersing yourself into their plot.
In your profile, you call yourself a geek and write a lot about geek culture, even comparing terms such as geek and nerd. What makes you want to write about this culture?
I think there are two large reasons that drive me to write about this culture. First off is my desire to educate people about the difference between "us" (the geeks, nerds, etc...) and the "normal" people. Just because we like to play video games, read comics, work on computers, and do other tasks like that doesn't mean that we're any less human than you or have the same ambitions and desires as you. The second reason would be that people need to be aware that nerds and geeks are no longer a force to be messed with. This group of people were once picked on and pushed around constantly, but now we're the rulers of this world. Why would you pick on a person that you will eventually turn to when your iPhone breaks? In the world of technology we are the kings.
You've mentioned that you're writing a book and sending it to a publisher. Can you talk about your story or are you keeping it a secret?
I am of course trying to keep most of my story a secret, but I can talk a little bit about it. To truly tell you about the story or try to sum it up I would have to write a whole other article. It's a deeply complex story that would take me hours just to explain, but I'll try to do it one sentence. It's a story about a boy who is trying to save his sister from a group of assassins after they learn about a special power that she's been hiding. Hmm that wasn't too hard... It's a fantasy that will eventually be a series, and it has a strong level of "magic" to it. Of course I use quotes around magic because it's not really magic but I have no other way of explaining it. I'm currently editing it and once I'm done it will go to a professional editor who I will pay a lot of money to push the spell check button on each word document. Then it goes to my agent who will get it published.
What are your future goals with writing? What are your future HubPages plans and what can we expect from you in the future?
My future goals with writing is to make a career out of it. Whether that means continuing to write books or starting a career in online writing I don't know, but you can expect to see me for a long time. Honestly I don't know what you can expect to see from me, it changes from day to day. I can say that it will probably stay along the lines I've been writing about so far; video games, movies, and other various things that pop into my brain.
What do you hope others take from your writing? How do you want others to see your writing?
What I want people to take from my writing is to just learn from my mistakes, or at least to maybe save them a few bucks on something they won't like, or to just gain more knowledge about something that they already know and love. I want others to see my writings as something that is honestly my personal opinion but that is something I back up with strong facts (unless it's an article about the history of a game or something where I state facts because they are facts). I don't like offending people with what I say, but I will tell the truth even if it means offending them. I'm a straight forward kind of person and that's how I want people to see me. I will never say something unless I am positive about its truth, or unless it's just a straight up opinion of mine. You can always come to me when you want the blatant truth.
