Victoria Lynn Interviews prairieprincess
Discover the plans and aspirations of a teacher who loves to write
Like me, you went back to teaching with a very full schedule this fall. How does that fit in with your writing goals and your plans for the future?
I am very happy to be back teaching this year, but you are right about it being busy. I am teaching grade six right now, as well as commuting for three hours a day. This is a new grade level for me, so it is a big learning curve. Writing has slowed down considerably for me right now, but the great part is that teaching something new is really giving me ideas for Hubs to write, once I get some time. Writing is definitely not over for me! I look forward to summer, especially, as a time when I can write to my heart's content. In the meantime, I will do it as I am able.
Tell us some about your writing background. Do you write for more than HubPages?
Thanks for asking. I have always loved writing, and even took some journalism classes many moons ago. However, it was HubPages that really inspired me to get serious about writing after many years. As I gained confidence as a writer, I branched out into other venues. I am the Winnipeg Cat Examiner, where I write about cats. I have also written for Interact Media doing content writing for companies. I have developed some websites, including one on cats and another on journaling as well.
In your HubPages profile, you mention the positive influences of your mother and grandmother. (I love your Hub, “
Scrabble with My Grandma," by the way!) What are the most significant lessons you learned from those two ladies, and how have those lessons shaped you in your everyday life?
Victoria, thank you for asking that question! Yes, you are so right. My Mom was such a talented writer and artist, and I learned the importance of pursuing your art through her. She was someone who really took creatively seriously, and that is a rare quality. She honestly felt called to write and paint, and because we were so close, that calling became part of me, too. She was also the kindest person you could meet, and that stayed in my heart. She always gave people the benefit of the doubt.
My Grandma and I have always been close, too. She is an amazing woman who was still rollerblading at the age of 70. I have learned to have a love of life from her. The woman is not afraid of anything and I have always found her incredibly inspiring!
I think it’s very cool that your mother (as mentioned in your profile) is a published poet! Do you have similar aspirations?
Yes, I would love to publish a book someday. There are many writers publishing books on HubPages, and that makes me confident that it is very do-able. The publishing industry has changed so much that the e-books are the way to go now.
You have mentioned that your faith is very important to you. Can you explain to us how that has affected your life as well as your writing?
Yes, I am a Christian and that does affect everything that I do. I believe in Jesus Christ and that we can know him personally, and I do pray about everything. I try to live in a way that doesn't hurt others.
Okay, I'm going to end with the age-old job interview question: What do you see yourself doing five years from now? Ten?
What a lovely question! I honestly don't think that far ahead, usually, but in five years, I would like to be teaching the same grade, at the same school. I would like to have written at least one book, an e-book, and to have the Hubs and websites still bringing in residual income.
In ten years, I would love to be making enough from residual income that I could travel around in order to write and take pictures. That would be amazing!
