An Interview with Multiple Hub of the Day Winner Cocopreme
Lighting one's husband's hands on fire never looked so good
You have written the coolest recipe Hubs on unusual things like glow-in-the-dark drinks and exploding lava cakes - how on earth do you come up with these fabulous things?
You mean those aren't normal meals for everyone else? Kidding, kidding. Really, inspiration hits me from random sources. Usually it comes from something I have seen on a show or read in a book. Then I think, "Wow. If I combine this awesome thing with that tasty recipe, it will become this new super creation." And I then I HAVE to add dry ice because everything is so much more impressive when it smokes and bubbles. My family is convinced I own stock in the dry ice company. I also have to give a lot of credit to my husband. He helps me make the ideas into a reality and he comes up with some pretty neat creations of his own. He can be spotted in Hub pictures and videos shaping volcano cakes and lighting his hands on fire.
Many of your Hubs have a science theme. Could you tell us more about your interest in science?
Science is awesome and people are starting to realize it. I have always been interested in how the world works and why. I am also intrigued by the possibilities of science. My interest in mad science and cool experiments in particular was kindled a few years ago when I was teaching preschool. Learning should be a fun experience, so I was always looking for ways to make science entertaining enough to keep the kids' attention. And then I discovered that experiments that fizzle are actually fun for adults, too. And then presto, I became a mad scientist (cue the maniacal laughter).
Many of your Hubs are related to parties (games, party recipes, party favors, etc.). Are there many celebrations in your life? From what we see on HubPages, you seem to live a very festive life!
I do holidays big, especially Halloween. October becomes one big month of fun activities at my house. I love writing, but if somewhere down the line it doesn't work out, I guess my back up career would be an event and party planner. The cool thing about writing online is that I get to do it all and then write about it.
You also have a passion for books - would you say this has contributed to your becoming an online content creator? What is it that drives you to publish your work?
Oh, I am definitely a book worm. The world of stories has always been my escape. Wanting to create my own worlds and share my own ideas has been an overflow of that love. Telling people about the cool things I've discovered just feels natural to me. I get excited about the things I love and want the rest of the world to be excited about them also.
You have published well over a hundred Hubs and been on the site for three years, so one might consider you to be a pretty experienced Hubber. Have you ever been surprised by your most successful Hubs?
I am still baffled about why some Hubs do well and some don't. I have a few Hubs that I am afraid to touch because I don't want to spook the traffic flowing in. And then I have Hubs that I thought would do great, but are deader than 4am on a school night. I cannot explain why some Hubs do so well. I am just grateful for the ones that do and I'll keep on tweaking the ones that don't until the magic happens.
What have you learned over your three years on HubPages that new Hubbers would really benefit from knowing right away?
The biggest mistake I made in the beginning was writing my Hubs like they were for a magazine audience. Catchy titles and narratives are not what most internet viewers are after. Readers want to grab information and go back to looking at funny cat pictures. The quicker you can get to the point and give instructions in your Hubs, the better. Think about how you use the internet. When you have a question, most of the time you just want a simple answer. Then you move on to something else. So make your Hubs user-friendly.
