Have You Heard?

HubPages has released several big updates this week!

This Friday, we announced an update to Featured Hubs and the Quality Assessment Process that rolled out this week. What changed? We have increased the minimum quality score newly-published Hubs need to be Featured and have also given Hubs (based on Hubber Score) longer grace periods during which they are Featured to prove that they have a heartbeat. Because Hubber Score now determine's a Featured Hub's grace period, we have also adjusted HubScore and Hubber Score calculations to put a larger emphasis on human quality ratings attained through the Hub Hopper.

You can find more about these updates on the HubPages Blog, in the FAQ, and in the Learning Center. To learn more about what you can do to ensure that your Hub meets the quality requirements required to become Featured, check out the Pro Tips below.

To help you more accurately gauge how in-depth you're getting with your Hubs, we have also rolled out a beta feature in the HubTool (which was originally only available to 10% of Hubbers) that provides tips and feedback on your progress.

Because we have our hands full with so many features and programs at the moment (more are coming down the line), we have had to postpone our April contest. Rest assured it will be rescheduled as we can sufficiently clear our very full plate!

To help you stay abreast of the latest HubPages feature developments, community programs, and policy changes, we created a "What We're Working On" thread in the Forums. The thread will be updated in real time and can therefore be used as a helpful reference point should you like to know what is happening on the site.

Happy Hubbing,

Our quality score reference scale

How to Stay on Top of Higher Quality Standards

Starting this week, new Hubs will need a higher quality score in order to be Featured. This means that high quality ratings are even more important if you want your Hubs to get special placement on the site and be made available to search engines.

To be safe, we recommend writing a Hub that meets the criteria of a Hub rated eight or above on our  Informational Writing Scale. Hubs meeting this description have:

  • A clear and specific title that is well supported by the content
  • Descriptive, supportive headings for Text Capsules and additional media
  • A fully-developed message with complementary tone, noteworthy diction or visual aids, and abundant detail
  • Exceptionally-crafted media and formatting that combine to create an aesthetically pleasing page
  • Supporting elements (like tables, maps, polls, etc.) that enhance visitor engagement
  • Objective, non-promotional, insightful information with a logical structure and smooth transitions
  • Excellent use of the English language with few or no grammatical mistakes

This does not mean that every Featured Hub must meet all the criteria of an eight-rated Hub or above. Our minimum quality cutoff is much lower than an eight, however because we have human raters, each Hub's rating has a certain margin of error, so Hubs close to the edge of our minimum quality requirements may not be Featured.

Shooting for an eight-plus Hub will give you a very good safety margin. Besides, Hubs of that caliber are far more likely to succeed in the long run. Why not forget about meeting minimum standards and really go for a winner?

The Informational Writing Scale makes for an excellent reference point!

An Interview with TheKatsMeow

Tips and insights from a Pinterest Pro and long-time writer

Your Hubs are splendidly Pinterest friendly, with beautiful opening images and the occasional overlaid caption. Did you pick up this know-how just from being an active Pinterest member? What general Pinterest tips would you share with Hubbers who would like to see readers pin their Hubs more often?

I actually got involved with Pinterest because I was hearing such great things about that site. At first I joined simply out of curiosity, but once I was there, I quickly fell in love with it! When I joined, I saw that many people were sharing their how-to articles and they had great pictures. I try to keep that in mind when I incorporate pictures into my hubs.

In terms of tips: I think that the better your pictures, the more likely they will be pinned. Also, I find it really helps if you edit your title into the picture. When people see your title and they are interested in the subject matter, they will be more likely to click on your article.

In addition to writing on HubPages, you are also a freelance writer and the lead writer for a website called Spaceships and Spice- how long have you been doing these things? How did you get started with Spaceships and Spice?

I have been writing for almost 10 years now, online and off, I’ve always loved to write and it just came naturally to be doing something that I love. I got started with the website Spaceships and Spice because of my love of all things sci-fi and fantasy. I’ve been writing on that website for over a year and half now. It comes naturally since I am already heavily interested in those things and it never feels like work.

You share in your bio that you studied anthropology. What inspired you to enter that academic arena, and do you ever find yourself incorporating any of your anthropological expertise into your work?

I absolutely use my education everyday! Learning about anthropology wasn’t just technical training that I could use on the job, it’s something that I use all the time in practical situations as well. I try to look at things as objectively as possible, and I never try to form conclusions until I have all the facts. That’s a huge part of anthropology and it passes into the online world as well.

As an active Hubber, freelance writer, and social media user, how do you manage your time and avoid distractions? I am sure you have to contend with many!

When dealing with so many things, sure it can get overwhelming at times, but I am a firm believer that if you are doing something you love, it really isn’t work. I love writing so a lot of the time it doesn’t even feel like work for me. The most important part of writing online is that you make your own schedule, so I make my own deadlines and I try my best to be strict with them and not to put things off!

I really admire that you use original images in almost all of your Hubs and love how beautiful they are. I wish more Hubbers would do this! What advice could you give to those who are not yet accustomed to making regular use of their own images?

Thank you for the compliment! I feel that anyone can take good pictures, it’s not very hard. I have taken some photos that I thought weren’t going to be great, but once you fix them up they turn out really well. There are also some great tutorials out there to help new photographers learn the basics, and I love using image editing software when my pictures aren’t perfect.

Why is it that you write online? What are your long-term goals on HubPages and beyond?

I write online because I love writing. It’s a new form of expressing yourself from a journalistic standpoint. Online writing is the future. I love teaching things to other people, and writing on Hubpages is a great way to help others out. Hubpages is a wonderful hobby of mine, but my goal with the site would be to take it to the next level: I would love to be making a serious income on this site. Beyond that I would love to have a full time job as an online writer.

That said, they did not evolve into the garden gnomes we know and love until the late 18th century.
