An Interview with TheKatsMeow
Tips and insights from a Pinterest Pro and long-time writer
Your Hubs are splendidly Pinterest friendly, with beautiful opening images and the occasional overlaid caption. Did you pick up this know-how just from being an active Pinterest member? What general Pinterest tips would you share with Hubbers who would like to see readers pin their Hubs more often?
I actually got involved with Pinterest because I was hearing such great things about that site. At first I joined simply out of curiosity, but once I was there, I quickly fell in love with it! When I joined, I saw that many people were sharing their how-to articles and they had great pictures. I try to keep that in mind when I incorporate pictures into my hubs.
In terms of tips: I think that the better your pictures, the more likely they will be pinned. Also, I find it really helps if you edit your title into the picture. When people see your title and they are interested in the subject matter, they will be more likely to click on your article.
In addition to writing on HubPages, you are also a freelance writer and the lead writer for a website called Spaceships and Spice- how long have you been doing these things? How did you get started with Spaceships and Spice?
I have been writing for almost 10 years now, online and off, I’ve always loved to write and it just came naturally to be doing something that I love. I got started with the website Spaceships and Spice because of my love of all things sci-fi and fantasy. I’ve been writing on that website for over a year and half now. It comes naturally since I am already heavily interested in those things and it never feels like work.
You share in your bio that you studied anthropology. What inspired you to enter that academic arena, and do you ever find yourself incorporating any of your anthropological expertise into your work?
I absolutely use my education everyday! Learning about anthropology wasn’t just technical training that I could use on the job, it’s something that I use all the time in practical situations as well. I try to look at things as objectively as possible, and I never try to form conclusions until I have all the facts. That’s a huge part of anthropology and it passes into the online world as well.
As an active Hubber, freelance writer, and social media user, how do you manage your time and avoid distractions? I am sure you have to contend with many!
When dealing with so many things, sure it can get overwhelming at times, but I am a firm believer that if you are doing something you love, it really isn’t work. I love writing so a lot of the time it doesn’t even feel like work for me. The most important part of writing online is that you make your own schedule, so I make my own deadlines and I try my best to be strict with them and not to put things off!
I really admire that you use original images in almost all of your Hubs and love how beautiful they are. I wish more Hubbers would do this! What advice could you give to those who are not yet accustomed to making regular use of their own images?
Thank you for the compliment! I feel that anyone can take good pictures, it’s not very hard. I have taken some photos that I thought weren’t going to be great, but once you fix them up they turn out really well. There are also some great tutorials out there to help new photographers learn the basics, and I love using image editing software when my pictures aren’t perfect.
Why is it that you write online? What are your long-term goals on HubPages and beyond?
I write online because I love writing. It’s a new form of expressing yourself from a journalistic standpoint. Online writing is the future. I love teaching things to other people, and writing on Hubpages is a great way to help others out. Hubpages is a wonderful hobby of mine, but my goal with the site would be to take it to the next level: I would love to be making a serious income on this site. Beyond that I would love to have a full time job as an online writer.
