Hybrid Cats

Updated on October 21, 2011

When two species of different types, class of family go through a sexual intercourse, the offspring that are reproduced as a result are known as hybrids. These hybrid creatures have a genetic combination of both their parents and their characteristics are the mix of both the parents.

Many of the hybrid creatures are formed as a result of mating of different breeds of animals naturally, while in many cases they are made to breed exclusively by geneticist to produce different hybrid creatures.  What ever the case may be, these creatures a true wonder of nature.

When it comes to cats, there are many hybrid cats available today. These hybrid cats occur in nature as well as they are made exclusively by mating cats of different breeds. These cats are wonderful creatures as they have physical and behavioral characteristics of both their parents belonging to different classes and families of cats.

Following are some famous hybrid cats:

Savannah Cat

Savannah Hybrid Cat

The savannah hybrid cat is produced when a wild African cat and a domestic cat mate with each other.

The savannah cats are domestic hybrid cats and are ironically more social and friendly than ordinary domestic cats and are much more loyal. The savannahs are usually compared to dogs regarding their loyalty and friendly nature.

Overall savannahs are much taller than any ordinary domestic cat and far stronger. Their type of fur and coat also depends on the types the parents belong to. In general they are wild looking cats which are tall and healthy.

They usually have tall deep and cupped wide rounded erect ears, a fat nose and hooded eyes. They are also characterized by their very long legs, their head is tall but not wide, and their neck is long and slender.

One of their characteristic feature is ocelli which is a central light band bordered by black. It gives an eye-like effect behind the ears. Their eyes are usually blue, but they may green, brown or even gold in some cases. Their eyes are the shape of boomerang and have a hooded brow.

The savannahs are very friendly and easy to handle cats. They can walk around easily on a leash unlike any other normal domestic cat.

The Pixie Bob Hybrid Cats

The pixie bob cats are the result of sexual intercourse between male bobcats and any female domestic cat.

The pixie bob cats occur naturally and are not the products of genetic combination tests of geneticist.

In 1985 they were discovered by Carol Ann Brewer who successfully discovered their origin naming the first hybrid she discovered as pixie. The pixie bob cats are large and heavy cats.

They have a large muscular body just like a typical bobcat. They have a woolly coat that stands up from their body.

The wooly coat of their bodies consists of their characteristic spotting pattern. They have a medium sized and wide pear-shaped face and have typical bobcat ears.

Their tail is short which another common feature of a bob cat is. They also differ from other cats by having seven toes. The pixie bob cats are highly intelligent and are very friendly.

The Bengal Hybrid Cats

The Bengal hybrid cats are a new type of hybrid cars that are produced by making a cross between a domestic feline cat and an Asian leopard cat.

The Bengal cats are usually medium to large in size and weigh from 7 to 20 pounds. Their coat is usually spotted or marbled. The color of their coats varies in different species with most common colors being golden, rust, brown, orange, or ivory.

Bengal cats too are highly intelligent and friendly cats. They can be trained to walk in a leash. If set free, these cats are very fond of jumping.

The chausie cat is a result of the cross between a domestic cat and a Jungle Cat known as Felis chaus.

The chausie cats have a large body with strong musculature. They are recognized by their heavy boning, full broad chest and long legs.

They are usually black in color or they may be grey. Except for few cases their bodies are free of markings and they are plain dark cats.

The word Toyger is combination of word “toy” and “tiger”. The Toyger cats are also known as mini tigers and are a new breed of hybrid cats created by Judy Sugden.

They are formed when a cross is made between domestic stripped cats with a Bengal stripped tabby cat. The Toyger cat unlike other hybrid cats is a designer cat.

The designs of its coat are specifically designed then a cross between various cats is made so that a cat with a similar design is produced.

These cats have a varying trend of colors and patterns, but they are all recognized by their resemblance to tigers and they all look like miniature tigers.
