how to stop a barking dog, tried the citronella collar and it didn't work
kaz.28@hotmail.c.uk
We had a barking dog problem. Purchased a bark collar, the one that beeps a warning when they first bark and gives them a little poke in the neck when they bark again.
It seemed cruel at first so my husband felt the the little electric poke and deemed it safe enough for a good size German Shepherd. It sure did work good. Only after a week, we never had to put it on her again. We just showed it to her and she learned.
First make sure that your dog isn't barking out of boredom or because something is wrong, and then it's time to look at some other options . I also agree that the shock collars do work well, some people will tell you that they're cruel and inhumane, but having worn one myself I can tell you that it's more of a nuisance than painful, but effective in immediately identifying undesired behavior. I have a detailed hub on my experience with a shock collar here http://hubpages.com/hub/Petsafe-No-Bark … ct-Review.
That said, there may be a better way to do it if you're often around your dog when s/he is barking. Come up with a command word to train your dog to (for my dog it's "enough"). Work with your dog on a daily basis, training him/her to come to you and sit or lay down when they hear the command. Give the dog a treat as soon as it is in the desired position. Start this when there is nothing exciting going on, and depending on your dog's level of training you may need to start on-leash. Once the dog knows the command, use it when s/he is barking at something, and reward accordingly when the desired position is reached. It may take several tries when the dog is actually barking because s/he is already distracted, but as time goes on the dog learns that there are rewards for listening to you at all times, and then their concentration on whatever they were barking at is broken and they learn to stop barking once you take notice. I like this latter method a lot better if it works, because then dogs know that they won't get punished for giving a warning bark at a genuine threat.

How do you get a persistently barking dog to stop barking so much?He bards at everything. A leaf could blow across the driveway and he'd bark at it. When I tell him to knock it off, he stops for a minute then goes right back to it.

Have you ever used a bark collar on your dog?Our dog is an extremely loud and obnoxious barker and we are surprised that we have not had complaints from the neighbors yet. Have you had any success fixing a barking problem and if so how?
