I also agree that the shock collars do work well, some people will tell you that they're cruel and inhumane, but having worn one myself I can tell you that it's more of a nuisance than painful, but effective in immediately identifying undesired behavior. That said, there may be a better way to do it if you're often around your dog when s/he is barking. Come up with a command word to train your dog to (for my dog it's "enough"). Work with your dog on a daily basis, training him/her to come to you and sit or lay down when they hear the command. Give the dog a treat as soon as it is in the desired position. Start this when there is nothing exciting going on, and depending on your dog's level of training you may need to start on-leash. Once the dog knows the command, use it when s/he is barking at something, and reward accordingly when the desired position is reached.It may take several tries when the dog is actually barking because s/he is already distracted, but as time goes on the dog learns that there are rewards for listening to you at all times, and then their concentration on whatever they were barking at is broken and they learn to stop barking once you take notice. I like this latter method a lot better if it works, because then dogs know that they won't get punished for giving a warning bark at a genuine threat.
