Trust, respect and communication. Whether you're teaching him/her to stand still or walk slow, you have to let know what is right and what is wrong. And give the horse some space/respect/trust.
Repetition, Repetition, and Repetition. A Horse learns much like a young child. Repeat over and over what you are trying to teach him. Build a trust with your animal, in doing this your animal will know what to expect from you and what is expected of him!
