No John, the fish wont eat your newts unless the fish are massive. They do however eat anything they can get into their mouths and will eat all the frog and newt spawn. Frogs come first, lay masses of spawn and then leave the pond. Newts come later, lay single eggs wrapped in pond weed and then they leave sometime later. I don't think they have been eaten. I bet they return next year. However, you wont breed amphibians in a pond with fish in it, or dragon flies, or caddis flies. Fish eat everything, so your instinct to build a second pond is correct.
