    How often to change carbon in a canister filter?

    You should change it every month.  So the carbon stays good.

    You really only need activated carbon if you add medication to the water and it needs to clear out. As long as you can wash the gunk out in a bowl of tank water, there's really no need to change the filter media. The carbon itself will stop being effective after about two weeks, but again it's not needed for the normal functions of the filter under usual circumstances.
