they are given a sense of knowing when to move on, by their Master.
Perhaps humans, should hear this sense of moving on....

Lack of needed resources
Competition between species for food, nest sites or other resources.
Seasonal tracking of fruit (hummingbirds) or nectar.
They have internal biological clocks- circadian rhythms. Hummingbirds fatten up their body for the long flight.
Most birds migrate at night. Sometimes it is a twenty-four flight to cross ecological barriers like the Gulf of Mexico. Then they will fly both day and night.
