What is appealing about having a pet hamster?

Do hamsters really become "pets," per se? What are they like as pets?

Well, to be honest, I would like to know the answer to that myself!   smile   All they do is sleep and when not asleep, eat and poop and make that unearthly noise on those dang wheels in their cages...it drove me nuts!   Give me a cat anytime.  Yes, they sleep a lot, but they are quiet and warm and on a cold night, make great blankets!

I had hamsters as pets when I was young and my daughter has had them too. It is important to handle them daily and when you do this you learn the character of the hamster. They are fun and can be little houdinis. I think that golden hamsters are easy to handle and tend to have a nice nature.
So my answer to your question is a definite yes, hamsters do make good pets that you become attached to.
The only downside of keeping hamsters is their short lifespan.

Growing up we had quite a few hamsters, some were better "pets" than others. The two we had since babies were great. We handled them constantly and we never had a problem with them biting anyone. My sister's and I could leave them out and they would just run around the floor and through homemade obstacle courses and they would come right back to us. Our cats and hamsters were the best of friends. However without early handling they are pretty antisocial and tend to be mean towards humans. Although I'm sure different breeds of hamsters have different social and personality traits.

Hamsters are fab pets providing you're old enough to look after them and not torment them. I'm very dubious about children having pets as they do not seem to realise that rodents are nocturnal and you can't play with them whenever the mood takes you. I had two Syrian hamster characters 'Pointy bobkin' and 'Grumpy'. Both were priceless little characters. I had a sea saw for them to play in and both perfected 'forward rolls' each day when their bedding was changed. It was like a little thank you for their fresh bedding!

When I was younger I had a pet hamster that enjoyed taking sunflower seeds out of my hand. I liked having a hamster because it was small, furry, and cute. Also, it's much easier to handle than dogs or cats running all over the house and doesn't make huge messes. They are also quiet creatures.

I adore hamsters!  Had a teddy bear for a long time, he was brilliant! I'd clean out the lower section of his house, he'd clean the top.. stuff all the old litter in the side tubes and I'd give him new stuff!  Wonderful pets.. if you don't mind the wheel going all night long!

As a child, we always had a pet hamster in the house.  It was a pet the whole family enjoyed. They were trained to walk up your arm and sit on your shoulder.  We always gave them little treats to eat so they would sit there longer. They are cute to watch and easier to care for than other pets.

It's not really so appealing to me, but the cat really likes looking at it all the time.

Wait a minute... where's my hamster and why is my cat so fat?
