A stray cat I feed has dirt and crust in his eyes. Should I clean them and what do I use?
If the stray cat is friendly, you could put on latex gloves and clean them with cotton balls dampened in a warm water. Be careful - sometimes those stray critters go crazy! :-)
or maybe a mix of one drop of baby shampoo in lots of water so it doesn't sting its eyes.
i would not feel comfortable using any kind of soap in a animals eyes. i would suggest feeling things out first, see how far the cat will trust you...will he let you pick him up or hold his head still for a few seconds? if so, then i would suggest using guaze and soaking up warm water and squeezing it into his eyes after first wiping away the excess around the eye. to be on the safe side i would dab a small amount of three in one anti biotic ointment into each eye. neosporin is identical to the ointment the vet gives for the eyes, except it has the added benfit of easing pain. it is safe to use in the cats eyes, you can even ask your vet. if the cat will not tolerate you holding him and his head for a few seconds, i would take the time to gain his trust first. if you are very worried you can take him to the vet to get them looked at.
