    Can pets suffer from mental disorders like people do?

    I have an inbred cat and sometimes I swear, if he was a child he would be autistic. I don't mean that lossley at all. I have studied psychology and I have an autistic nephew. That leaves me to wonder. Can cats be autistic? What about other mental disorders?

    I think they can, which is very unfortunate. Being an imbred cat, the symptoms will vary to an "ordinary" cat, what with having a completely modified genetic code and all. But I don't think the disabilities can be commonly associated with humans, as they will react differently to it, and will have different symptoms. I'm not certain, but my guess is as good as any.

    I think so, my friends cat gets scared and starts to pull out her own fur. She has bald patches around her tail and back. It is not very pretty and we all think it has to do with her pysche.

    Yes! In fact, you should read some of Temple Grandin's books - for example, Animals Make Us Human, Animals in Translation, Thinking in Pictures. Dr. Grandin is an animal scientist and autistic.

    I work with dogs with "mental" problems in my work. There is much we still do not understand, and the difficulty with animals is that we cannot communicate via a common language. So, therefore we cannot really know what they are thinking.

    We know animals grieve, and they can get depressed and anxious. They can have obsessive compulsive disorder and it is perfectly reasonable to think they can have some of the same other mental conditions.
