What Does It Mean When Cats Wag Their Tails?

Its like cats wag their tails in different styles. When you are about to feed them they will wag their tails differently than when they see other cats. What are the different styles that cats can wag their tails?

Maybe an answer could be: they wag them when they are content, or happy, not just when they are mad (as is commonly thought)

There are a couple of different tail wags, depending on the cat.  There is the walking around with the tail up in the air, lazily wagging in contentment, and there is the tail slapping the ground in aggravation.  Don't expect to see much of either of these from a Japanese Bob. smile

I have seen a few different tail wags from our cat.  When she is content, e.g., lying on my lap and being scratched, her tail wags slowly and irregularly. When I pick her up and she wants down, it wags more quickly, making a pounding gesture. When she crouches down to play, her tail wags in a kind of "S" shape. And when she's watching birds from her window perch, only the tip of her tail moves in a jerky manner.

In addition to the other great answers here, cats will wag theirs tails in a rolling, twitching motion when contemplating an action.

when a cat wags its tail it usually means that it is anxious or upset. it can also mean that they need play time and have some aggression built up in them. cats need to hunt for at least a few minutes a day, it is your job as a cat owner to provide this "hunting time" just like if you had a dog you would take it for a walk.
