Will keeping a hamster discourage mice

Is it true that the smell of domestic rodents, e.g hamsters, discourages wild rodents, e.g mice from entering the house

Certainly not true in my experience. I have kept as many as 30 domestic hamsters in a room which repeatedly got targeted by wild mice, attracted by the hamster food. Because the mice were smaller then the hamsters they could squeeze between the cage bars and have a snack. Likewise I didn't find wild rats were put off by the scent of domestic rodents, although at least they were too small to squeeze into the cages!
