What is the average lifespan of a chicken?
One of our hens died this week-- I think she was one of our original ones, which would make her maybe about 8 years old. She was a good layer-- but not in the last few months, a Rhode Island Red and one of our largest, heaviest hens .Is this old for a chicken?
I think average might be around 10 yrs- but it can be all over the place...some die young at like 2-3 of natural causes some can be in their teens. I haven't every kept a chickens past 2.5 yrs since we replace them as their production goes bad.
8 yrs old is a pretty good life for a chicken.
It really depends on how hungry you are. Here in the Philippines they last for around 4 months!
Thanks for answering. We usually only keep 3 or 4 at a time, and have had a couple that either flew the coop or had an accident or run in with another critter. That one was probably our longest resident, so it made me curious about normal lifespan. I
