    Is it normal for a pregnant dog to lose their appetite?

    My mother's Westie is about three weeks pregnant and has barely eaten for about a week. She's lost a ton of hair and has barely any energy. All she'll eat are treats and people food. I keep begging my mom to take her to the vet but she claims it's normal and it will pass. I'm afraid the dog and her puppies aren't getting enough nutrients. Is it normal for a pregnant dog to lose their appetite? Is there anything we can do to help her?

    It is in no way unusual for a dog to have a reduced appetite early in her pregnancy. If it does not come back after about a week, you should take her in for a physical exam and a chemistry profile (blood work) at your local vet.
    No, this is not unusual and their is really nothing you need to do to help her appetite return to normal. She will be really hungry soon and you will see her eating to make up for those lost calories.
    Is your mom certain that her Westie is pregnant?

      Yes she's sure. This is the dog's second pregnancy so my mom knew what to  look for. She says she's going to take her to the vet in a week or two just to make absolutely sure though.

      Good, she knows what to watch for. Depressed appetite can be a sign of illness, which is why I was concerned. I have a hub about how to tell your dog is pregnant, but I am glad you already have this covered!!
