How can I get my dog to not be scared of fireworks?
Every holiday or event involving fireworks really makes my dog crazy. She sometimes runs around and knocks stuff over, but last night she jumped right out of the window breaking the glass and injuring herself.
It really is too much for her to handle.
How can I train my dog to not be so fearful of fireworks?
My dogs are the same. I'm afraid there is no way of taking away their anxiety of fireworks. The only solution that I know is to try and keep her away from fireworks. If you are like me it's hard to do if you have firework crazy neighbors. I just put them in the car and stay away until it's over. Their traumatizing behavior is just not worth making them go through it. Good luck.
Hi Luis, I wrote a hub on this issue some time back. It is called Dog Training Tips: How to Help a Dog that is Afraid of Fireworks. I suggest using classical counterconditioning. Alexadry also has an excellent hub on counterconditioning if you want more info. than what I provide in the article.
Some people might tell you to buy a thundershirt and all of your problems will be over. I would not waste my money on a product like the thundershirt. They work in some dogs since they induce a state of fear. (This is similar to what your dog feels when she is embraced by a stranger.)
Good luck. If you have questions on how to use the technique you can leave them on my fireworks hub.
Some dogs are just like that, and there's probably nothing that you'll be able to do to change it. Keep on hubbing
classic conditioning using desensitization techniques work well. It depends on what behaviors the dog presents and how engrained the reactions are, as well in how long it will take to switch out this behavior.
