   The breed you get will depend on the disposition of your child, the willingness of the family to take part in the dog's care, your dwelling (house or apartment) and size of your yard.
   
   Also, you have to decide if a puppy or an older dog is best. Dogs are puppy size for a short time. They grow faster than they mature. Consider a rescue dog.
   
   As for breeds with children, I am partial to beagles (have 3), but Golden Retrievers, labs and dachshund are all good choices. If you have a big yard, consider a greyhound or whippet. Very gentle, but need room to run.

      Golden Retrievers are perfect little kid dogs.  It all depends on who is going to take care of the puppy....they are a lot of work remember and crating is a no no!  Get a baby gate instead and put the pup in the kitchen when you can't watch it.

      I have trained a Golden Retriever, a lab mix and three beagles using the crate method. It involves precise feeding tims, taking the dog outside as soon as he eats and watching for other signals. The crate becomes the dog nest  and they will like it.

   I, personally, don't recommend one breed over another for bing good with children.  I know of aggressive Goldens and very kind Rotties.  Pick out a dog based on the dog's INDIVIDUAL temperament - not on breed generalizations, which often can be wrong on a dog-by-dog basis.
   
   My advice, go to a shelter, find a sweet dog and adopt it.  But don't look for a "breed."
