A daily brushing cuts down on the shedding quite a big, and in cats, it cuts down considerably on the hairballs. In addition, I use a shedding comb on my cats twice a week. On those days, they get 3 brushings: one with the shedding comb, one with a regular cat comb, and one with a cat brush.
When I had a German Shepherd, I used a shedding comb on him also and brushed him. Shedding combs work well on horses, too (just as an afterthought).
