I'm not sure if it's novel, but one of the easiest thing is to find a group you admire and are close enough to, to help. Contact them and ask what their needs are. Most often they need people to volunteer to be foster homes, but not everyone can do that. For my group, I transport and also write grants and thank-you notes. There are a million little things that go into it and someone would likely love to give up one of those jobs.
Transport volunteer, fostering, online sharing and support -- I built a website for a local no-kill when they first got going, and volunteer some time for moderating comments and continuing to develop the content, and write grants. Other volunteers pick up donations from area businesses, make phone calls, do distant home visits, etc. There's basically something that everyone can do .
