Over protective dog

    Why is my dog protective when I am laying down or sitting if another dog comes around? How do I correct this?

    He loves to play with other dogs. If I am sitting down or laying down at the beach or something  he will get protective lung at them, bark, growl, warning nips that look more aggressive then how hard he is actually biting. I am nervous that it may get worse if not handles now as he is still young.

    With humans he is usually pretty good, but with work lately he has been barking and lunging. He has not been nipping or anything. I do feel like that is something that could get worse if not dealt with properly.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

      My rottie would do this when I would walk him or be out with him....protection. He would not want anyone within 15 feet of me. If I told him it was okay and told him to sit and lay down next to me and stay, he would stop. I guess you may have to try to do something like this to assure him or her that it's okay....they did the correct thing but now it's ok and time to lay down and relax. They will always watch but if they realize you accept the person they start to realize all is good.  I had 3 males that did this over a 30 yr span. Just love your dog up and just assure them everything is good and time to relax. Good luck. PS I have owned many dogs including Rotties and even a litter of them! They are the most loving and adorable animals as long as you treat them that way and socialize them. One of mine adored infants!!!!
