Draw H.P Lovecrafts Cthulhu Sea Creature- A Video Drawing Tutorial For Inspiration

Updated on July 12, 2011

How To Draw Cthulhu

Cthulhu is a classic creature created from the equally excellent horror fiction writer H.P Lovecraft who wrote many classic short stories that made it into many classic horror movies like Re-animator and From Beyond. The mythology surrounding Cthulhu consisted of a local town that was part of a cult who sought to revive the Cthulhu creature which was a fearsome sea monster and the suspense of the book builds up to the horrifying conclusion that the creature has already been resurrected as the story goes in The Call Of Cthulhu.

Here I thought it would be cool to try and draw Cthulhu with it's tentacled beard and wings and almost menacing webbed hand claws.

In the drawing video I start out by sketching a part of the outline and it nearly is always the head and the wings are sketched in rather lightly and almost block like that can be narrowed down later on in the sketching process. Like any other drawing it's a good idea to draw lightly and sort of feel your way through your drawing so that if you're going to make any mistakes you can catch them pretty early on at the initial sketching phase.

Once you've got a grasp on the drawing and the figure of your Cthulhu creature you can get to work on fleshing it all out and darkening the pencil lines better when you know that the form and structure of the creature as a whole is clear and as good as it's going to be. I liked drawing the tentacles on Cthulhu's face as it certainly helps make the monster like a definitive sea creature especially with the squid like breathers poking out of its cheeks at either side.

This is only the second time I've drawn Cthulhu, the first being a request for someone who wanted a tattoo in just black ink of the Cthulhu creature (I'll have to dig that one out for here!) and certainly this is the better drawing as I have tried to add a bit more form and depth in this pencil drawing and left out any ink as I wanted top just highlight the pencil drawing process and show you how to bring a creature drawing to life almost. One of the key aspects of drawing established creatures is that you can put your own spin on it and it doesn't matter that much if it's a differing image to the one people are used to seeing.

The painting of Cthulhu above I used as a reference photo to draw my own interpretation of Cthulhu and it certainly helped inspire me to draw this widely popular creature.

Watch the drawing video below and try and work out how to draw Cthulhu yourself, it takes an inspired process of creativity and a focus of effort to really have a good try at drawing it, but it's worth it when you have a few tries at drawing something quite challenging.
